RYAN HEADING TO THE JETS
Posted by Mike Florio on January 18, 2009, 11:51 p.m.

Now that the Ravens are out of the playoffs, the Jets are free to offer defensive coordinator Rex Ryan the head-coaching job.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Jets will formally offer the position to Ryan, and that he plans to accept it.

A formal announcement is expected Monday, and a press conference likely will occur on Wednesday.

It remains to be seen whether offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer remains on staff. Several days ago, Adam Schefter of NFL Network suggested that, if Ryan gets the job, Schottenheimer will ask to be released from his contract.

REPORT: SCHOTTENHEIMER TO STAY WITH JETS

One of the first questions Rex Ryan would face once he’s formally announced as the Jets head coach has reportedly been answered. Sportsnet New York is reporting that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will stay with the team.

Late last week, reports surfaced that Schottenheimer wanted out of New York if he didn’t get the head coaching job. The reality, however, was that he was contractually obligated to remain with the Jets until they told him his services were no longer needed.

The Jets finished ninth in the NFL in scoring in 2008 and 16th in total yards. They mustered just 20 points in the season’s final two games, however, and the losses to Seattle and Miami erased any chance they had of playing playoff football.
