A month from tonight - that's right, tonight - the NFL Draft will commence in prime for the first time.

Currently with the 27th overall pick, what will your Dallas Cowboys do? A safety? Perhaps Southern Cal's Taylor Mays or Texas' Earl Thomas? An offensive lineman for when, not if, Flozell Adams finally breaks down? Maybe a receiver, like Oklahoma State stud Dez Bryant?

The bigger question, can we trust Jerry Jones? For some recent data, let's look back and grade the Cowboys' 2009 draft class.

Prepare to cringe.

You can make the argument that the Cowboys are better at finding free agents than identifying blue chips. Right, Tony Romo, Miles Austin and Kevin Ogletree?

As for last year's draft, remember, Jerry trade, trade traded all the way down to the third round ...

3rd Round
69. Jason Williams - F. Hampered by a sprained ankle suffered late in the pre-season, the linebacker never made an impact on defense or special teams. This year he'll hope to be as good as Bobby Carpenter.

75. Robert Brewster - F. After tearing a chest muscle during a workout last summer, we still haven't seen this offensive lineman in a Cowboys' uniform.

4th Round
101. Stephen McGee - D. Thankfully, the former A&M quarterback didn't take a snap in the regular season. But several practice squad players like free-agent Rudy Carpenter better.

110. Victor Butler - B. Relatively speaking, he was superb. Two sacks against the Carolina Panthers and contributed on special teams. At least there's hope for him to be a front-line starter at linebacker.

120. Brandon Williams - F. Season-ending knee injury in the final pre-season game has the linebacker playing catch-up.

5th Round
143. DeAngelo Smith - F. The cornerback was cut at the end of camp.

166. Michael Hamlin - F. After breaking his wrist in pre-season he barely got on the field, but the Cowboys still have he'll develop into a decent safety.

172. David Buehler - A. The kicker led the NFL in touchbacks. Now if he could only make field goals.

6th Round
197. Stephen Hodge - F. Linebacker from TCU missed the entire season with a knee injury.

208. John Phillips - A. Tight end proved more consistently productive than Martellus Bennett.

7th Round
227. Mike Mickens - F. Defensive back was placed on practice squad but eventually cut.

229. Manny Johnson - F. Receiver from Oklahoma spent the season on the practice squad.

looks more like a stretch of bad injuries than a bad draft--this is a team built through acquiring and developing college kids and Jerry and his staff have done an excellent job of it

And even Mike Hamlin, who the coaches really like.

I wonder what Whitt was giving the Spencer pick before this year. Probably an F there, too.

Richie Whitt is one whiney and negative SOB. The depths that he went early last year to make Wade and Romo look bad was disgraceful--name calling and lots of hate coming from that dude.

I agree that we may look back and see some huge missed opportunites from last years draft, but for now it is WAY too early to tell. And the previous two Jones/Phillips drafts were very strong, imo.

He's also negative on the Mavs and Rangers. I'm not sure what his deal is but he has to be overwhelmingly insecure.

If ever a guy needed an occasional b-slapping it would be Whitt.

When your 1st selection in the draft is a 3rd rd pick it is hard to get an A for the draft.

Some of the picks due to injury were not able to play so I give them an imcomplete grade at this stage and the ones who did a play like Phillips,Butler and Buehler did a decent job and were able to contribute.

As for trusting Jerry well I trust he will listen to the scouts and coaches who will be in the draft war room with him to make soild selections.

well i'll just say i trust jones to run the draft more than i trust most "journalists" to write a non-biased story.

It is dead time for the writers so if nothing interesting is going on just make up something to help create a story. I don’t have an issue with the writer just the people who buy into it.

In short, absolutely.

...How bout that pic, with Dr. Pepper can. You know that's a Jerry set up pose lol

*Edit* And I just read it...how the hell can you possibly even grade this past years draft? You've got to be kidding me.

When you draft that many players, you're bound to hit on a few.

Only reason I read this crap was because I thought he was going to explore what Jerry has done in recent years. But he did last years draft. You can't judge a draft for a couple of years. Proof by looking at what Spencer has become last season.

When I saw, "let's look at 2009 draft, and cringe." I scrolled down to see if he even mentioned other drafts. This guy is a loser.

Agreed, though that's a awfully low bar to set there. I don't trust Jerry with anything outside of financial matters. If he'd simply use his money to hire the best football people and let them run the show, we'd be more successful. Doesn't matter though. Can't remove the owner and it could always be worse. At least Jerry tries.

I love how he knows how terrible the 09' draft class is AFTER ONE SEASON. Sure we didn't get much help from the players this year, but what if:

David Buehler ends up being the Cowboys' kicker of the future?

Victor Butler and/or Brandon Williams end up being a key 3rd down pass rusher for the next 5-7 years?

Michael Hamlin is our future SS?

Robert Brewster is our right tackle of the future?

These questions cannot be answered after one season. This guy is a tool!
