Rick Barnes out as Texas coach

The Texas Longhorns have decided to fire coach Rick Barnes after 17 seasons, multiple sources told ESPN.

Texas athletic director Steve Patterson informed Barnes that his tenure is over, a source told ESPN.

Patterson would not confirm Barnes' firing when reached Saturday.

"I'm currently in Iowa for the NCAA swimming and diving championships," Patterson said. "Our conversations are still ongoing."

Two coaches interested in the Texas opening and who will be in the mix to replace Barnes are Wichita State's Gregg Marshall and VCU's Shaka Smart, according to sources

He had a fairly consistent, but unspectacular program.
I mean, few teams make the tourney as often as they do. But it ends quickly.

Probably time to move on.

I'm curious to see how they do going forward.

It's not like they've ever been a powerhouse. In fact his run there was probably the best overall in their history...I would guess.
But you'd think they'd make a final four every once in awhile. Not sure what the number is but imguessi g in UTs entire hisory they've only been to between 2-4 ...with no titles.

Time for some new blood in there. They had a good run, just didn't go deep enough consistently.

Please leave Gregg Marshall alone.

Those two are named for every big job. But, they've both also said they're happy where they are. If they don't take this job, I don't see them ever leaving Wichita State or VCU.

That's the general feeling around town on Marshall. If there is one job he would leave for it would be the Texas job. Otherwise he will stay another 10-12 years. The local sports morning radio show host (a former WSU alumni) about an hour ago said we will know something within a week.

Texas was very, very talented this year IMO. They just broke down in some fundamental areas at times. Will be interesting to see who they bring in. There is a lot of talent in Texas over the next few years and if they don't bring in the right coach, you could see a lot of that talent leave for other BB powerhouse programs. It's critical, for Texas, to bring in a coach that will keep that talent at home.

A&M loaded up this year on top Dallas area (therefore, national) talent.
Outstanding recruiting class for them.

Shaka supposedly in talks with Texas already. Marshall a strong possibility at Bama.

Marshall told Bama he wasn't interested but their AD came yesterday anyway and spent 8 hours on campus and left enpty handed. I heard today the Texas job is between Smart and someone else not Marshall.

Didn't take Barnes long to find another very good coaching job.
Good for him, and best of luck at Tennessee.
He's from that area of the country and his wife actually is a Tenn alum.

This is not meant as a jab a Texas, but Tennessee had historically supported their basketball program much better.
I think attendance is nearly 50% higher there.
He had a good chance to continue going the the tourney each year.
The question is whether or not he get more Final Fours. Easier said than done.

Looks like Shaka ends up in Texas. WSU made Marshall one of the top 10 highest paid college coaches in the country. The locals are going bonkers.

I'm partial to Crimson red..:p

Well it seems like you will not be getting WSU HC Smart as it looks like they tried to get him but he said now...at least at this time.

Not sure who else Alabama is looking at right now.

WVU still has Huggy Bear Huggins...who is starting to look more and more like the 80's movie character Porky from the Porky's movies.

I don't follow college basketball but I'll watch the March Madness stuff. I love all that!

Actually I don't understand bb really...it seems awfully complicated to me.

Think Shaka would win big at UT.

Full court pressure defense plus Texas AAU kids is a pretty solid formula IMHO.
