http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...rafts-top-pass-rusher-joey-bosa-worthy-4-pick

Since 2000, there have been 13 edge pass rushers selected in the Top 5 of drafts. Collectively, they have averaged five sacks per season as rookies. Only Peppers and Miller hit double digits as rookies and both copped NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Peppers collected 12 sacks in 12 games and Miller 11 ½ sacks in 15 games.

Seven of those 13 Top 5 edge rushers finished with five sacks or fewer as rookies, including Tyson Jackson. The Chiefs took him with third overall choice of the 2009 draft and plugged him in at end in their 3-4 scheme. He started all 16 games without posting a sack

Imo this is the most important part of this article:

There are no guarantees in the Top 5 of a draft at any position -- quarterback, running back, pass rusher, cover corner, left offensive tackle… NFL teams weigh a player’s college productivity and measurables and then translates them into pro potential. That translation becomes his spot on the draft board with a premium placed on the position he plays.

The article starts off with the false premise Bosa is the drafts top pass rushing specialist.

You don't give up do you? Watch the tape, the dude was double and triple team blocked all year long. It was clear teams were not going to let Bosa ruin them, so they threw everything they could at stopping him. There are some guys with a better get off and bend around the corner, but almost all have significant question marks. Bosa consistently and over time has been one of the best players in college football.

The guy he might be somewhat like on the list that Gosselin has was Justin Smith. Smith was certainly faster and more explosive but he was a good run defender and a good pass rusher. Probably not elite at either, but very good at both. He had a great first year but after that was always a 6-7 sack per year guy. Is that good enough at #4? I would think for most the answer is probably no.

Another guy that might be a similar player was Greg Ellis. Good all around, not great at anything. Played for 12 seasons, gave us 7 sacks a year...take our his worst two years he was around 8. Good but not great and not a difference maker. We all wanted more out of Ellis giving his first round draft status.

Given all of this....I just don't know if Bosa is worthy of the #4 pick. I think Elliott makes more of an improvement to the team, same with Ramsey. I understand the QB of the future group. I still think trade down is the way to go if you can get decent if not equal trade value.

I am still on defense with the first pick, and would be really happy if bosa was the pick...I prefer ramsey at this point (if they go defense), but we will see how things fall

I was listening to Kirwin yesterday on the radio, he was talking about Bosa and that he sees him as topped out. He was better trained than most kids are in high school, and in college because his dad was a former player. But he has plateaued and is probably as good as he is going to get. He compared him to Brian Cushing, who was also highly trained in HS and College. He felt that coming into the NFL Cushing had topped out, he was as good as he was ever going to be. And it looks like he was right about Cushing.

IMO not really...take Lynch, Goff or Wentz

Bosa isn't an elite athlete...sort of a Chris Long when he was at Virginia..incredible production but lacked the elite athleticism to be a NFL star

Yes, exactly. This is one of the biggest reasons to avoid Bosa.

Throw questionable intangibles into the mix (suspended for first game=drugs, kicked out of the last=dirty play, inconsistent hustle), and there are just too many red flags with this guy.

I see an entitled punk kid who was 'destined' to play in the NFL, trained to do so from day 1, and has been treated like the top dog everywhere he's been.

I don't see a hardworking motivated person who will take his new professional career seriously. This is not the type of guy you draft at 4. Especially when he doesn't even have elite traits to compensate for his lousy intangibles

There's a lot of merit to your post.

Cushing was a 'roider who got caught, once the steroids were removed his level of play dropped...
