He had this defense ranked number 1 in the league 9 weeks into the 2012 season before losing everyone notable besides Spencer.

I liked Ryan and still do but I have nothing to statistcally to prove he was good. He went to a team that has made the playoffs quiet a bit without him.

They were donig good before Church went down, but I would say first 6 weeks. I think it was around the Seattle game?.

maybe week 4 now that I think about it.

    You are not being serious?

This is not the King of Anything.

There are so many parades during the celebration and anything held out in Metaire is a purely minor event.

People actually can pay the nonprofit that runs the parade to be the King of the Parade.

A non-event here. keep moving folks.

    Nothing to see.

Meh, they gave 900 yards more than the next closet team and had the highest yards per attempt in both passing and rushing defense.

I had looked at what they gave up in yards relative to the league average a while back and did the same for other horrid defenses from various years and I think they were they worst in those terms for the teams I looked at. They or a an early 2000 Colts (IIRC) were the worst.

Defenses will surrender more moving forward but relative to the average at that point and time you can gauge how poor teams are compared to teams of other years. New Orleans was either 1 or 2, and I think it was 2 because I extrapolated the relative performance of the Colts to the average from last year and the Saints would have had to give up an ungodly amount more to reach that level of suckiness. #2 isn't the worst but it's really bad. Not that I did this for every year but it's hard to imagine many seasons where defenses were getting that treatment from the opposition prior to 2000.

I never cared for Rob so glad he is gone...

On a side note, my sister Michele and Ryan Bros and their dad and few others including one of the Ryan Bros who works in STL, had a good dinner after the game.

They were playing well until Thanksgiving.

You probably wouldn't know it by looking at final scores but they held a number of teams to 20 points or less which would have been top half of the league. Cincy allowed that at 8 but I don't want to waste time to see if other teams gave up points on offense and special teams like Dallas did.

Punt block and fumbled opening kick against Seattle for 10 points of the 27.

2 INTs for Chicago that were scores. 34 total points in the game.

KR for TD against Baltimore on 31 points. One if the few where the defense gave up more than 20.

INT TD against New York along with 5 more turnovers. 2 drives for the Giants netted 15 total yards and 2 FGs. Also had a TD drive start at Dallas' 31.

    First Giants game 17 points.
    Tampa 10 points
    Carolina 14 points
    Atlanta 19 points
    Cleveland 20 points

Only other game up until T-Day where they gave up more than 20 was Philly at 23 points.

The defense was significantly better in all areas but turnovers and for whatever reason they just couldn't seem to buy one in 2012. That's really the only plus in 2013 over 2012 and I give Kiffin and Marinelli credit even though it's hard to imagine how any coach wouldn't put an emphasis on turnovers while the next guy does and actually gets them.

It's seemed like for a while now goin back to Wade that the defense plays not to loose rather than playing to win Ryan ended up looking the same. Church is the first guy in a long time to attack the ball

You might be understating the shape of NO's defense when he got there. They were awful.

I'm not saying Ryan is a miracle worker, but he wasn't a bad coach. But yes, Sean Payton is a better coach than Garrett and Bree's is better than Romo so their offense helps lots.

Rob did a good job pluggin in new guys. I never seen so many guys come off the couch. It's probably just in my mind that Church going down was at least the beginning of the end for the D that year. I also think something else happened that caused the split between Ryan and Garrett, Ryan out on the feild arguing with players from another team didn't help him but I never really have thought he was let go just because the play of the defense.

Yeah I hear you. The funny thing is, she doesn't even like football and rarely even watch it but because of her work/position and knowing so many people she gets invited to so many football games and related events, I'm jealous of her. She even had David Butz personally sign picture with my name and miniture helmet and brought to my mom's house yesterday because I'm going through some tough times physically.

I bet he's much happier in NO. Much better HC & better team.
Getting fired in Dallas was a good thing for Ryan.

Fantastic post. Our offense was turning the ball over at an incredible rate and really had to lean on the defense that was playing fantastic, but the offensive ineptitude doomed us to a 5-6 start in 2012. Although the company men will never admit to that, doesn't fit the agenda.

    Ryan was 100% unjustly fired.

Ryan was fired as a scapegoat. He was not the reason for the team's problems. That said, I didn't like his big mouth. I wished he would just shut up and do his job. No one can deny he's done well in New Orleans. I guess we'll see if Marinelli can make something of this D. It's definitely an uphill battle for him. We need an infusion of talent bad.

So is Jerry. He probably misses that about Rob.

NO may never be the same.
