A bit out of left field, but I was able to get my hands on tickets to the Day of Champions in Rochester tonight. I wouldn't have gone, but Emmit was the main attraction if you will because he was receiving some figure of the year award from Coke.
It was a suit and tie affair (which I did not know) that was actually pretty entertaining. They had both a silent and live auction that gave away some sweet stuff. A lot of it was from the local pro teams (Redwings (AAA Baseball) and Knighthawks (lacrosse)) but they also had a lot of Emmit stuff and of course Buffalo Bills stuff.
The live auction sold a framed signed 22 jersey for around $1800 and a Peyton Manning (who was honored last year) signed helmet went for just over $2000.
The event itself was pretty interesting. A lot of local high school athletes got awards and media personnel did also. But there were also a lot of athletes being honored there. They were:
Joe Mesi (name? sp?) the boxer who was undefeated but had a brain injury so his career was put on hold.
J.P. and Marshawn from the Bills.
Ryan Callahan (one of my favs) from the New York Rangers who is a Rochester native.
The PBA bowler of the year...I forget his name was there being from Rochester.
Another Rochester native was there who will be on the U.S. olympic team as a pole vaulter. Jenn Stucnyzki(sp?) is supposedly the best woman's vaulter in the world.
They all gave their schpiel, "thank you, reach for the stars...etc" but were all pretty brief and did a good job so it was enjoyable.
Then they announced Emmit to a standing ovation and he was OUTSTANDING. His speech was nothing to write home about becuase it was typical and cliche but he took a few questions afterword and was verrrry funny.
He was asked who ever hit him the hardest, and he said "his mom" and told a story about how she punched him in the jaw because he was "too big for the belt" but it was very funny. He ended when someone asked him to perform a dance move and he said he'd do a "dissappearing act," which was very funny at the time.
The most interesting comment he made was about his time in Arizona saying that it told him that the game had passed him by. Additionally, and I did not know this, he said that the Bills offered him a contract after he retired and he said it was a GOOD number...all the while he made fun of the fact that he beat them in Super Bowls and found it ironic that he was being honored in Bills country.
One nice gesture he made was towards a kid who played football in high school despite only having one hand who was honored. Emmit said during his speech that he wanted to send one of his touchdown balls from his own personal collection to him which is very kind.
All in all it was a great event. Rich Funke, who you may not have heard of but is involved with sports tv around here, was great as the MC. He said that he'd be working with Emmit on ESPN...and for only 19.99 more he could on Cinemax and HBO too.
I got a signed Justin Morneau baseball for $20 in the silent auction which was cool and got to meet Marshawn Lynch very briefly. Seemed like a nice guy, I told him I was a Cowboys fan and he just kind of laughed.
We took a few pictures but weren't able to get the $900 meet-n-greet tickets so I wasn't able to meet Emmit or get much good, all I have is some from his speech. I'll post them later if they are any good.
