OXNARD, Calif. – Right tackle Jacob Rogers injured his left shoulder in a scrimmage but could play in the preseason opener Saturday against Arizona, Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday.
Jones said Rogers suffered the injury Saturday and an MRI on the shoulder was negative.
"We dodged another bullet," Jones said.
The Cowboys received a scare Friday when rookie defensive lineman Marcus Spears suffered a sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, a right ankle sprain and a pulled groin. He is expected to miss four weeks.
Rogers, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder Jan. 11, appeared to injure his shoulder during a one-on-one drill against rookie defensive end DeMarcus Ware in Monday's afternoon practice.
Rogers, a second-round draft pick in 2004, didn't play a snap of offense last season but appeared to be closing in on the starting right tackle spot early in training camp.
Rogers had surgery on his left shoulder after his freshman season at USC and later underwent two more surgeries on his right shoulder. Despite the injuries, Rogers was a three-year starter for USC.
He had trouble making the transition from left tackle, where he played in college, to right tackle his rookie season. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells moved him back to left tackle last season but changed his mind before the beginning of training camp.
With Rogers' main competition at right tackle, Torrin Tucker, struggling early in camp, Parcells said the Cowboys are already looking to sign another offensive tackle. Parcells hasn't ruled out an emergency plan that would have left guard Larry Allen moving to right tackle.
If that happens, second-year players Stephen Peterman, Ben Noll and Tyson Walter would compete for the left guard spot.
Parcells said that rookie offensive tackle Rob Petitti (Pittsburgh) would move from left to right tackle.
Safety picked up: The Cowboys will bring in former New York Jets safety Derek Pagel to replace punter Clinton Greathouse, the Texas Tech and Calgary Stampeder product who was released Tuesday.
Pagel (6-1, 208), who played at Iowa, appeared in five games with the Jets last season and 14 in 2003.
More injury news: Fullback
Darian Barnes (sprained left ankle) will sit out Tuesday's practice. Barnes has limped through the last three practices and not participated in team drills. With Parcells wavering on whether to even carry a fullback on the roster, Barnes knows he can't afford to miss many practices. ... Running back
Erik Bickerstaff is practicing with a strained neck. ... Parcells said he didn't know anything about
Drew Henson hitting his hand on a defender's helmet last week. Henson has struggled so far in camp.
