This is my final attempt to explain it to you.
OTA's are called "voluntary" because that is legally what they have to call them as per the collective bargaining agreement. All it really means is that you cant "fine" them for not showing up. But EVERYONE is fully expected to be there by most coaches, players, and owners. But apparently NOT with Jerry Jones. He makes side deals and special treatment despite how his coach feels about it.
If that doesnt bother you, then whatever. For my money, those players dont belong here. I expect more out of them.
Is it a huge deal? No, but that is because the Cowboys are a complete mess anyways. So its kinda par for the course. But if we are ever going to get back to respectability on a year and year out basis and one of the best franchises in the NFL long term, then Jones has to change a lot of the way he does things. Undermining his head coach, getting a real head coach, and not dealing with players like McClain are a few of them.
Your final attempt to explain it to me? You speak as if you are an authority in the situation when you are as clueless as one could possibly be. You are just another gullible fan who has fallen for the NFL's cowardly attempts to undermine the CBA.
Let me explain it to you:
They do not have to show up.
They are not expected to be there.
They do not have to have an excuse.
They cannot be punished, fined, or retaliated upon in any way for not attending.
Section 5. Miscellaneous ( a) No Club official may indicate to a player that the Club’s offseason workout program or classroom instruction is not voluntary (or that a player’s failure to participate in a workout program or classroom instruction will result in the player’s failure to make the Club or result in any other adverse consequences affecting his working conditions).
And yes, teams have been fined and had practices canceled for this very thing. So again I ask you, What should Jerry have done?
