Romo Contract vs. Dak Contract

In Romo's final contract, the headline was that the Cowboys were giving Romo a 6 -year contract extension for $108M, $18M per season. Combined with his 2013 salary, his total deal was 7 years, 119.5M - just over $17M per season. That same offseason, Joe Flacco signed a 6 year deal for $120.6M, $20.1M per season. Ultimately, just based on the raw averages, Romo was giving the Cowboys a 15% discount off the price of the top QB contract in the league.

But the truth is actually that over the first 4 seasons of Romo's deal, he was actually paid only $16.375M per season. He never cashed in on the final 3 years of his deal, and thus was only paid 65.5M, and he never received the last $54M of his back-loaded deal. That means the Cowboys paid Romo 18.3% less than the Ravens paid Flacco.

Compare that to today, when the top QB is making $35M per season. If the Cowboys treat Dak the same way that they treated Romo, then they would offer him a back-loaded contract for 7 years that pays him 84.93% of what Russell Wilson is making. That is a 7 year deal for $208M, an average $29.7M per season. And his first 4 seasons under that contract, Dak would make $28.5M per season.

Along comes Stephen A. Smith, who claims that Jerry would NEVER treat Romo the way he's treating Dak.

The implication is that Dak is being treated worse than Romo. But the truth is Romo was willing to take a discount to be the QB of the Cowboys, and Dak is not. It is certainly Dak's right to negotiate as hard as he can to get the best deal he can from the Cowboys. But can we please dispense with the notion that Jerry would gladly pay Romo, but refuses to pay Dak. That is simply not true. The Jones want a discount from Dak - just like they got a discount from Romo. They are treating Dak with the exact same amount of respect as they treated Romo.

Let's just cut him and start over. That should make most of you happy.

Contract negotiations are easy, hard or any degree in-between regardless of any particular player or sport. Any sort of 'mistreatment' allegation is misplaced UNLESS Jones neither signs Prescott to a new contract nor tags him. The end result is the only relevant denominator. cha-CHING.

They're not comparable because one was an elite quarterback, and the other is only Dak Prescott.
Tony was no more elite in 2012 than Dak was this year. In fact, he ranked worse in almost every category.

Dak ranked better in 2019 than Tony in 2012 in: Y/A, TD%, INT%, and QBR. And they both ranked 10th in passer rating.

So there's just absolutely no merit to this. In terms of evaluating contract...Tony was 6 years older and broke his collarbone two years before that. Dak, by every metric, should get a significantly higher contract than Romo.

Signing Romo was a no-brainer, and so there was never ever any drama with it... I guess unless you count that Parcells and Jerry “holdup” story. Signing Dak is definitely a lot more stressful, especially since there are 12 non-Commanders/Giants games on the schedule. Even Jerry has to get nervous writing out that contract.

lol, this is pure stupidity. Romo’s performance from his time as a starter obliterated Dak’s. The contract he received was not based on one year. If that’s the case Dak should get paid off of 2017.

tony romo was also 33 yrs old that season when he got the contract. I do agree Dak shouldn't be paid the highest paid QB in the NFL. But based on the time her gets paid and what he has done for us. He deserve top 5. Because top 5 this year may not be top 5 next year. #capChanges.

I think he should be paid more than Wentz and Goff with no question. I think $32-35 million (hopefully less) is what Dak should take. He is still relatively young. Maybe he take a short deal with less years to hopefully get another contract idk.

2013 Cap 123mill when Romo was signed. Average salary per year 18 mill....Romo counts 14.6% against the cap. Age 33. Playoff Wins 1.....And had back surgery that same year not even a month after signing the deal.
2020 Cap close to $201 mill when Dak will sign (franchise tag or new deal hopefully). Dak Average yearly: 32-35 million would count 15.9 - 17.4% against the cap. Age 26 Playoff wins 1

Now I loved Romo at QB btw.

Man thinking back then and thinking how gold jacket witten was that dude back then.

Look at Witten numbers from Romo's years years around when Romo signed that contract. We need another dynamic TE that can create problems.

Very few wanted to sign Romo to that extension because he was coming off one of the worst games of his career against Washington in a season finale elimination game. Even some of his supporters had reached the end of their rope with him. We had just finished our third straight 8-8 season.
Your facts are off here, kjj
In the 3rd 8-8 season (with 4-12 supporting casts, btw) Romo led the team on yet another game-winning drive at Washington in week 16 to bring them on the brink at 8-7. He then had surgery and did not play week 17. They lost and went 8-8

For his career, he ended up being 3rd all-time in 4th qtr, game-winning drives on a per game basis. 3rd all time in history
Not bad.

You’re missing 2 major variables:

1. Romo was not 26 years old, making borderline league minimum up to this point. He already had a major contract extension and was looking for another that would lead him into his late 30’s. Dak hasn’t even entered the prime of his career yet, and has had the best 4 year regular season stretch for a cowboys QB, of any age.

2. Romo and Flacco’s contracts were signed within a month of one another. They were negotiated at the same time for 2 QBs in very different stages of their careers, as Flacco had just won the Superbowl and was much closer to Dak’s age. At the time Romo wasn’t giving the Cowboys the kind of discount you’re projecting, as it was top dollar for a QB in his situation... much less sign it a whole year after the league leading contract (in your Russell Wilson example). A fairer comparison would then be with Dak’s contract and Mahomes. Mahomes just won the Super Bowl, both are due. What is 84% of 40-45m a year?

Those making the claim that Romo was older and more injury-prone are just stating facts.
I think he was better, but at that stage in his career, not more durable.

Right, we came off our third straight 500 season in 2013. The debacle against Washington in the season finale was in 2012. A week prior to the Commander game in 2013 Romo didn’t play very well against Green Bay suffering 2 INT’s in a game we lost by one point. He played well the following week against Washington but got injured. His ranking in 4th quarter comebacks means very little because most of them didn’t occur in critical games. That 4th quarter comeback against Washington in 2013 was one of the few he had in a do or die game. Where was that game the year prior against Washington when our season was on the line? Show me the list of 4th quarter comebacks he had in do or die games. He suffered meltdowns in some of those games. I’m in no mood to get into Romo argument so don’t start.
