During an interview in the mid-90s, Cowboys OG Nate Newton was asked what it was that made him the Pro-Bowl player that he was. Without hesitation, Newton said, "Emmitt Smith". "Before Emmitt joined the team, I was just another fat OG", Newton said. "It's so much easier to block for a running back with Emmitt's vision & ability. I only have to hold my block half as long as I used to, and he's by me."
Fast forward to 2006. For the umpteenth year, the Cowboys offensive line is a problem area. They are mediocre at best. Their immobile QB, Drew Bledsoe is getting sacked more per game than almost any QB in the NFL. Plus, the running game is average, so the opponent's defense just pins their ears back & go after Bledsoe. Of course, with all the heat he is facing, Bledsoe is throwing as many if not more interceptions as touchdowns.
Enter Tony Romo. He is much more mobile than Bledsoe, so he escapes many of the sacks Bledsoe was absorbing. He also has a quicker release. Suddenly, the offensive line also begins to block better for the running game, which gives Romo the added weapon of the play action passing. The offensive line that was a problem is a problem no longer. Can it be that simple?
