Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has announced the team probably won't allow quarterback Tony Romo in the Hall of Fame Game on August 4 against the Miami Dolphins, according to NFL.com.

"It's one of those deals where I suppose he could play five plays or whatever, but we might lean to no plays," Garrett told KRLD-FM. "But the clock starts on our '1's' in Week 2 of the preseason. So (Week 1 is) not going to be Tony's game."

Romo had offseason surgery to remove a cyst from his back in April, perhaps part of the reason Garrett wants Romo to ease into the season. Another reason could simply be its the preseason, so why take unnecessary chances?

Romo isn't going to play, because Vince Young is taking the 1st team snaps for week 1 HOF game.

The dreaded HOF game QB controversy. Is there enough time left to get a petition to the white house?

I don’t see anything wrong with letting him take a few snaps. Short high percentage throws. He is the leader of the offense. He should be out there.

Tony Romo, Kyle Orton may not play in Hall of Fame Game

09:10 AM ET 07.27 |Tony Romo is in on-field command of theDallas Cowboys offense in training camp, but he might not begin the team???s preseason schedule that way. Coach Jason Garrett revealed in an exclusive interview with 105.3 The Fan that Romo may not play at all in the Cowboys' preseason debut Aug. 4 in the nationally-televised Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. "It's one of those deals where I suppose he could play five plays or whatever, but we might lean to no plays," Garrett said. "But the clock starts on our "1's" (first-teamers) in Week 2 of the preseason. So that's not going to be Tony's game. That's going to be a Nick Stephens game and an Alex Tanney game," Garrett said, suggesting it's likely that veteran backupKyle Orton will join Romo in wearing a ball cap all night.

Fine with me. Let the backups play and see what they have. I'm more interested in seeing how well the OL does and the defense particularly the DBs esp S.

There is also no reason for Romo to get hurt in an insignificant game.

I understand and agree with Romo not playing, but why not Kyle? Heard he hasn't been impressive at all this summer from mini-camps to today. Sounds like he needs the work

You can't afford Kyle hurt any more than Romo really. While Romo is more important as the starter if you loose Orton then what are you going to do? Orton is one play away from being the guy. My only reservation to this is you don't give the new receivers as good of a look with those other QBs.

For my selfish reasons, Id like to see the first team play a series. But, I will not be upset if Garrett decides to sit the 1st team. I get it.

If we lose Romo, this team is in trouble anyways no matter who the back-up is. Orton needs real game reps and we know he won't get any in the last pre-season game. This leaves three games, two of which will be limited, to find his groove.

Might as well have me out there throwing ducks to our receivers :)

From reading about his camp struggles, just don't agree on not playing him at all. Orton may very well be able to lead the team if Romo goes down, but he is not the answer to a post-season run.

I can understand your point and it may well be the case. However, generally these guys come in and throw a few easy ones and go from there. If they thought Orton needed the work then he'd get it is my feeling. I think Orton can come off the bench and play this offense. Not as well as Tony but hopefully well enough for us to win. He's capable of playing in this league. He's just not in Romo's tier.

Keep Murray out for all five games too.

I agree. He doesn't need much work either. Give the ball to the other guys. I know what Murray can do and he doesn't need a lot of reps to get going. I want to see Lawrence, Randle, Tanner and Dunbar and whomever else they have or will get. And yes, I don't want him dinged up either.

If he was playing it'd probably only be one series anyway, so what difference does it make?

Why let him play ANY preseason games at all? Hell, let’s wrap the whole team up in bubble wrap. Like Parcells said, football players play football. Fans played good money. The game is on national television. Give the fans a few snaps.
