This is usually the good time to get a player or ex-coach. Get them when they are fresh out of the NFL. The NFLN did this with Vermeil and he was awesome to listen to because he was so insightful and wasn't afraid to use real football jargon and concepts. But, eventually the producers get to them and make them into generic announcers with very dull and often wrong analysis. The game is constantly changing and you need to stay atop of that and they become too lazy to do so.
Troy used to be really good. He used to pick his spots as to when to talk which was refreshing because we are watching the game on TV. It's not radio announcing where you need constant chatter because the audience cannot see the action. But, eventually Troy became generic, getting a lot of analysis on plays dead wrong and of course...he can't show his bias towards Dallas so he constantly argues anything he can against them (even when you go 13-3 or 12-4).
The best announcer out there is still Chris Spielman. People call Romo a football savant, but he's got nothing on Spielman. Unfortunately, when Spielman started to do some big games he started to change his announcing style. Given ratings issues over the years and that announcers today are far more criticized than those of yesteryear...maybe television producers need to think that what they've been doing isn't really working. But catch Spielman on a lower level game when he doesn't have some moron barking in his ear, his announcing is fabulous.
yeah troy went downhill , and is ok , but sometimes is irritating.
you have a good point, they get worse with time lol.
