Here are few scenarios for next year

Cap Hit Scenarios...............2017.......................2018.................2019
Stays and plays....................24.7m....................25.2m.................23.7m
Restructures.........................16.7m....................29.2m.................27.7m
June 1st trade/cut.................10.7m*....................8.9m...............*(cap hit stay 24.7m until 6/1)
Trade/cut in Spring...............19.6m.....................0m
Retires*.................................19.6m....................0m...................*(could recover 5m from SB)

My Plan
Stays as Back-up..................15.7m...................11.7m..................7.2m
Traded after June 1st............10.7m*...................8.9m.................*(13m in cap relief in March)
Traded/cut in 2018.................15.7m..................16.9m

If you believe Tony makes 14m and DAL pays the full 24.7m cap hit this thread is not for you...if you think he will not give a penny back there is nothing to talk about

I came up with a solution that gives DAL cap relief and it gives Romo options depending on his desires ......that is why I didn't do a straight restructure and used a Sept 1st option bonus...it helps delay the decision but still gives instant cap relief....it doesn't help DAL to restructure his deal and then trade him......it was the same argument with DWare

If Romo loves the team and wants to stay he will also want to help the cap.......he knows the Big Boys need to eat and he has made 127m.....15m over 2 years is more than fair considering he was only due 14m that wasn't guaranteed.......he could get cut and get nothing

But if Romo really wants to start he has options too.....if traded he will protect himself and get 3/41m with 23m guaranteed......all the greats have finished their careers somewhere else....Unitas, Montana, Favre, Emmitt, DWare

DAL is 7m over the cap right now....they will carry over at least 5-7m but that is not enough.....they will have around 20 FAs including Mo, Church and Carr.....all the top contracts will be restructured and a couple guys will be cut or take pay cuts- Free, Witten, Romo, Hanna, Wilber....all in they can create 40m+ in cap space so it is not a problem

Here is my plan

DAL plays this year out with Dak and Tony

If he wants to stay he takes a huge paycut and if he wants to leave he still gets paid but we don't get killed on the cap and get the cap space when we need it in the Spring......if we trade him before June 1st there is nothing we can do about the 19.6m cap hit but at least it will be off the books forever

Next Spring DAL signs Romo to a new 3yr/21m contract.....they take the 14m he is owed for 2017 and guarantees it plus another 1m for a total of 15m guaranteed ...... that comes in the form of a 1m base salary in 2017, a 12m option bonus in 2017 and a 2m base salary in 2018 .... that reduces his cap hit from 24.7m to 15.7m

Option bonus 12m due Sept 1st
................Base...+.....old bonus..+..new OB..=...Cap hit.............old Cap
2017------ 1m...............10.7m..........4m.............15.7m................24.7m
2018*------2m................5.7m...........4m.............11.7m................25.2m
2019*------6m................3.2m...........4m.............13.2m................23.7m

*if he is traded, salary jumps to 10m for both 2018-19 and he gets 250k per game roster bonuses

That makes it a 2yr/15m deal if we keep him as the back-up

It means he makes 3yr/41m if we trade him with 23m guaranteed

We can trade him anytime in 2017 and get top price since the new team will have control for up to 3 seasons......his 13m compensation for 2017 is very fair and we get immediate and long-term cap relief

I don't think its a financial decision at the end of the day, but I do think Romo is traded. They owe it to him to let him play somewhere instead of being a backup in Dallas. And given the dearth of QBs, Dallas should be able to get multiple premium draft picks back for trading him. It sad in a way, but it makes sense all the way around.

I do too.....but they won't give him away for nothing.......my plan is basically a sign and trade with the Sept Option Bonus of 12m.......if they trade him the new team pays the 12m.......if we do keep him we pay it but spread it over 3 years and get max cap relief

I'd love for Tony to get traded so I can continue to root for him...and I can enjoy a second favorite team.

If he is traded the Cowboys will be fortunate to get one second or one third round draft pick. His salary will be a major deterrence as will the risk of his health and age. It's possible he will be entirely untradeable due to salary/age/risk.

45% chance he gets traded
45% chance he retires or is cut before 2017 football starts
10% chance he is retained as a Cowboy in for 2017 football

W\e need a backup. I don't want Kellen Moore as Dak's backup in 2017. Better to keep him around for next season. Then the year after, we can trade him for a 2nd round pick.

If Sam Bradford brings back a #1 pick when he is owned 24 Million over two years, you would think at least one team would offer that much in salary and picks for Romo.

No matter what, if we trade him before June 1st the cap hit will be 19.6m

There will have to be some cooperation to get maximum benefits for everyone

The problem with that scenario is that it just doesn't make sense for the team to pay a 25 Million cap hit to a backup QB - and it doesn't make sense for Romo to take a paycut and be a backup when he could get playing time and no pay cut (or less of one) somewhere else.

If he's not starting in Dallas he should be traded. There will likely be a few teams that would offer him a deal like Peyton Manning received from Denver where it's pay-for-play, plenty of outs for the team, and big money for Romo if he can stay healthy. Any team that just accepted his contract as is would be getting a deal with zero guarantees and high pay for Romo if he could play.

If he has good value, it's only going to diminish with each year. No sense in waiting for the market that may be out there for him to dry up.

I think it's in everyone's best interest for Romo to move to another team. Gives him a chance to keep playing and gives Dallas a chance to really move on.

It makes sense for the team to have a great backup than going with Kellen Moore. We will survive one more year with the cap hit.

Yeah I can't see any way that he is going to want to waste a year (with a very fast closing window of time going against him) to be a backup here. I know he's been a team player so far this year but he made it very clear he has the desire to play. I definitely see a trade coming. There's a team that's willing to take that chance. Look around the league and have your pick since a healthy Romo is better than most the leagues starting QBs.

It doesn't make sense to construct a roster with Romo as a backup. Teams don't pay massive money for a backup quarterback. The only way I see him staying is if Dak falters dramatically...

And the thin chance of trading him this offseason becomes almost a zero chance the following offseason when he's 38 years old.

Exactly. Romo has been to more Pro Bowls than Bradford ( of course that is easy since Bradford hasn't been to any), he has been to the playoffs, led his team to two divisional titles that I can remember, has more 4th qtr comebacks than any other qb, etc. The only thing that Bradford has over Romo is age but both are injury prone. The Cowboys should not trade Romo unless they get at least 1st rd pick and more, imo.

The money for Romo is secondary. He wants a chance to win a ring. Denver is the right choice for him. And I agree he is traded unless Dak shows he indeed has more than a tiny bit of rookie blood in him.
