I think the problem is Romo wants to make that play too badly. It's almost like he gets the thought of a perfect deep strike in his brain and he's not going to change his mind. We've seen it over and over and he keeps saying he's going to work on it. I honestly think if he could change that aspect he would have by now, I'm starting to believe that urge to create a big play is something entirely out of his control.

lol the Brett Favre affect. But even Brett is limiting his throws because they have Adrian P. That keeps him from throwing interceptions.

because you have to keep the defense honest sorry all these people that think you can just run every play are hitting the bottle to hard. You have to make them respect the passing game and run deep routes etc the QB has to be smart sorry if Romo can't control himself then we got bigger issues
It seems to me like the Giants, their scouting department and their coaching staff had a good week of film study because they refuse to worry about the run after seeing the Cowboys throw bomb after bomb in Tampa.

It was sort of obvious that these guys were only interested in cutting out the deep stuff, probably knowing that eventually we would get impatient.

Alot of good points being made here.

I agree that we need to rein in Romo some, but here is the problem nobody has really mentioned yet.

OUR DEFENSE BLOWS!!!!

We have the 30th ranked defense in the league right now along with 0 turnovers and 0 sacks. Until this gets fixed we will have to score 30+ to have any shot at winning.

So the question is, how in the hell are we going to rein in the QB and at the same time tell him that he has to score at least 30 points or we lose???

Exactly. This is a team game. If Joe Flacco throws 4 interceptions does a Ray Lewis led defense surrender clinging to a 16-14 lead? If Phillip Rivers lights up the Ravens secondary like it was covered in kerosene... does Ray Lewis concede defeat when the Chargers coast to the 16 yard line? Trailing by ten to a good Dallas team at home in the 4th Quarter, do the Steelers Defense collapse like an origami Swan?

No sir. Our defense does so often it makes you wonder if they play with any confidence for the first 50-55 minutes at all. Why? And how can this problem be solved?. We need someone that we do not have on this team. Maybe we draft him, maybe we import him. But championship character is simply not on our roster currently. Bradie James? Please. DeMarcus? Possibly, but his personality does not support that role. The Cowboys lack a mental toughness that is very, very difficult to find, and even Parcells could not locate it in his stint here. And he quit. So his toughness is in question as well as far as I'm concerned.

This is a really good thread. Good job to the op. My expectations and hope for Tony Turnover have tempered a bit. Previously I would argue with anyone that he's a top 5 qb but it's simply not the case unless he can prove otherwise. His #'s are more prolific than guys that are BETTER than him. That's the bottom line. Guys like Eli and Ben don't kill their team repeatedly. I'll still lose my voice every Sunday rooting him and my Boys on. I've just come to realize that he's closer to the undrafted mistake prone kid who hasn't learned to manage a game and NOT sabatoge his team than the pro-bowl gunslinger who never gives up on plays, pays with passion and puts up great numbers.

I am a big Romo guy and he did play awful but WHY would Jason Garrett even call a play that gave him the option to make that deep throw.

It's like an alcoholic that you slide a drink over to. Just hide the damn bottle.

IMHO you should worry about keeping them honest AFTER they show that they can stop the run once or twice. They didn't stop it all night.

I think part of the quandary we're in with Romo, though, is that his biggest weakness (IMO) is that he's a TERRIBLE game manager. He's a fabulous, gun-slinging, play-making quarterback. But he simply seems unwilling to just drop back and "take what is given" play after play after play after play.

He'll dink and dunk for five minutes and then hurl that what-in-the-world-is-he-thinking???!?!??!?! throw to Hurd into double coverage.

This, to me, is our biggest issue with Romo. He's great when the big plays are available but downright bad when they're not.

And to date -- even with one Terrell Owens on this team -- the big plays are seemingly NEVER available in the big-time, must-win games.

I'm curious as your thoughts on this, because this is and has been my main problem with Romo. Perhaps I'm off base?

I don't think you are off base.

I think he tries to take too much of the team on his shoulders and make a big play to get the team back into things and in doing so he gambles too much.
It is the classic gun slinger mentality.

He needs to learn to trust the running game more, he needs to check down more as you noted and when you get that going you can take the occasional down field throw when it is there.

In other words he needs to be more like Aikman IMO. Aikman was not known as a great passing yards and TD stat machine, what he was known more was accuracy, making the right reads and the W stats. Now even Aikman has his stinker games, I am sure we all remember how that one NFC Championship game with SF started with him turning the ball over in the first half multiple times. But by and large he did not have many of those games while Romo continues to try and force things. I don't expect him to be perfect. I know there will be a stinker game here and there, but with Romo he has to limit those.

...lack of consistency continues to hound him...fans also need to consider how much pressure Romo was actually under sunday night...he's kept clean and still he throws 3 int's...that is just unacceptable...it would be one thing if he was being harrassed all game long...it's just inconceivable on a night where an offense rolls up 250 yards on the ground and gives up 0 sacks...

...if he does'nt get his act together along with the secondary the Cowboys are headed for a dismal season...
