Romo using Flacco's big contract as leverage

Tony Romo is living proof that a quarterback doesn't have to have a sterling postseason record to land an enormous contract. That's what happens when you work for Jerry Jones, a man whose blind loyalty to players has given many of them generational wealth.

Romo has the Cowboys completely over the barrel because of his unique talent to play the most important position on the field, and the organization's refusal to attempt to draft his successor. The Cowboys hit the lottery by signing Romo as an undrafted rookie out of Eastern Illinois in 2003, although they've never quite reaped any significant rewards from his prolific numbers.

On the surface, it seemed ludicrous to hear that Romo and his agent were waiting to see Joe Flacco's money come in before to attempting to strike a deal with the Cowboys. Flacco rolled the dice by playing into his contract year — and probably made himself an extra $20 million or so. The Ravens didn't mind paying a premium because they have another Lombardi to stare at every day.

But none other than Jerry Jones admitted that Romo was likely waiting to see what happened with Flacco. Romo might only have one playoff win since taking over the starting job six games into the '06 season, but he still has a tremendous amount of leverage.

Media trying to drum up a story. Tony isn't the type of guy to hold a kings ransom.

What exactly is the smoking gun here, that Romo's agents were waiting to see what the market value for QBs is going to be?

Wow, how dare they.

Any agent worth their salt would be doing the exact same thing. You see what other players in the same postion are getting and you adjust up or down to fit your particular situation. Nobody is saying Romo is going to get Flacco money, but seeing what Flacco got is a good starting point to see how much Romo should get. (80% of what Flacco got, 85%, ect......)

So it's somewhere between Brady's 5/57 and Flacco's 6/120. That narrows it down.

Brady's 5/57 is not much different that Flacco's numbers if you look deeper.

If the Cowboys don't pay, someone will. If I'm him, I take maximum $$$$.

How much deeper?

Flacco is guaranteed $52 million.

Brady is guaranteed $60 million.

Flacco's deal will likely be restructured in a few years to provide cap relief, because the bigger hits are the nonguaranteed portion.

I've looked as deep I needed to and there is a huge difference. One is 11+m/yr and the other is 20m/yr. If you only count the first 3 years, then it's 3/40 for Brady and 3/62 for Flacco. I have no idea why people cannot accept the fact Brady took a well below market deal.

Eventhough JJ did not pay much for Tony in the beginning and he probably did save some money he gained NOTHING, zero....Romo has no post season wins, no superbowls nothing.....Romo had no huge games in college he is not pedigreed he is who we thought he was....an undrafted quarterback who has a mediocre football career and now he is going to rake in the millions....good post

Probably for the same reason many refuse to believe that Romo might acutally hold out for a max deal.

I don't know what's going to happen here but I seriously don't believe that Romo is going to settle for some kind of below market value deal.

Not saying this is what you subscribe to but I am saying that it's foolish to believe this will happen. You don't fire your agent, go out and hire a new one if your plan is to take a below market value deal. Agent's, like players, get paid on contracts. The bigger the contract, the more money an agent makes. This didn't happen so Tony could come back and play for millions of dollars less, per season.

I guess we'll see what happens.

when your wife make a lot more than you do it gives you a little flexibility. AND its not like he has not made plenty of green before.

Is there ever a situation that goes by that someone doesn't use as a chance to bash Romo?

 Brady's $60 is like that of around a $130mil contract.

Oh cowboys fans.

Proving the stereotype right everyday.

Good thing it's lakers playoff time right around the corner and the Yankees will have opening day in a month. This will alleviate some of this type of stuff.

People keep saying this, but I don't understand why the two are comparable. It's not like Flacco signed for a ton less guaranteed -- Flacco got $52 mil and Brady got $60 mil. Flacco's ongoing base salary and cap hit, however, are much, much higher than Brady's. The two contracts don't seem comparable whatsoever.

The best outcome would be if his agent talks him into playing out his contract and testing the waters.:p:
