Reports coming out saying Manziel is likely the pick for TB at 7 if he's still there. Take it with a grain of salt, of course.

why would you be giving up being competitive. that's the wrong assumption. Lets say we do draft Manziel. then he sits and learns for a couple of years behind romo. you can still be competitive. didn't GB do that when they went from Favre to Rodgers? or Philly from Vick to Folk?

Green Bay was already a solid team before they drafted Rodgers. This team is going to struggle as it is, by not giving Romo every available resource to win games, we're giving up on him. Not sure how that isn't evident.

The thing is .... if Manziel falls that far, aren't you putting yourself in a bad position if you don't take him? Because if you don't, then you could well be forcing yourself to trade up in a future draft to get the same value.

His 2015 salary is only guaranteed for injury, not if he is released, which is why my numbers don't include any guarantees. As I said, cutting him in June has nearly no impact on this year's salary cap.

And that is where you are wrong. 7.5m of his 2015 salary became fully guaranteed when he was on the roster the 4th day of this year. It is fully guaranteed for injury. If he is on the roster next year the 4th day of the league year, 7.5m of his 2016 salary becomes guaranteed.

If the team doesn't think it can win with Romo, and thinks it should draft a QB to replace him, they should release him, and use that salary cap money in the future to help out said new QB.

Romo got his contract before the back surgery. And the first back surgery was on a cyst.

Release him affects the cap way more than keeping him does at least for one year and potentially for two. The first time they are really going to get cap relief by releasing Romo is 2016. You can have Romo for a year or until he gets injured or isn't doing the job and then bring in the rookie. A first round QB at pick 16 doesn't cost squat against the cap.

Yeah, we shouldn't hurt Romo's feelings for the long term improvement of the team.

I am not arguing with giving him help. but if manziel (too late now), was the pick. I wouldn't say its a bad thing. much like picking martin, yes it may directly help romo, but scoring points wasn't the issue, stopping it was. so did we help the team? yes, this is a long term look, building inside out.
