If you do that, you get nothing in return for him. That doesn't sound like a good strategy to me.

What's the alternative? Trade him now? Just not going to happen.

I'd much rather let him walk for nothing then extend a QB for big $ who has 1 playoff win. At some point we have to move on if we don't win, I'd rather do it before its too late then 3 years and 30+ million dollars later with nothing to show for it then either.

Brady's deal isn't fully guaranteed. It is only guaranteed for injury if he is on the team thru 2014. It is still 3/40 no matter how you want to cut it. If he plays the last 2 year, it for a total of 17m.

It's a 3/27 extension of a previously signed 4/72 extension. You can't look at it as a 3/40 in any case. The issue is that he is guaranteed a good bit of money even if he blows out a knee in the next couple years, and he will very likely not be worth 20 million at age 38-40 (very few quarterbacks in history have played at a high level at that age). Plus if he is still on the roster after 2014 it becomes fully guaranteed.

So again, under almost every likely circumstance, he will be guaranteed all that money. What is the probability that Brady's skill level will deteriorate to such a point that he is released due to skill reasons at the end of 2014. And if that were the case, then it was like he never signed the extension at all (except of course that he gets an extra 3 million).

The per year averages might be team friendly, but all the rest is very Brady friendly, and that's why it was signed.

Yeah, that's what I would do. I'd trade him now, while I knew I could get something for him if the price is too high. Having said that, I think we all know that's not going to happen but this conversation is not about what we know. It's about what we thing yeah?

Trust me, I'm with ya. I'd pull the trigger on a deal in a second. My asking price wouldn't even be that high to be honest.

I've never been a Romo hater and defended him for a long time, but I absolutely don't see the logic behind extending him at this point. Don't want to see it happen at all.

At this point, I would rather compete for the next 3 years with Romo, Ware, Spencer, Witten and Austin. They all will be gone soon enough, so why re-build now? I think we are pot committed at this point, to use a poker term.

You'd be right.....if we had a history of being competitive with those players. You can't be pot committed if all you're holding is 3rd pair (love me some poker references). How many straight years can we miss the playoffs or be bounced in the 1st round with the same core of players before we give up? 1 playoff win in 6 years should not get job security and a big pay day.

Why not trade him? Buffalo is desperate for a QB, I would try to get a couple of good picks from them and take my chances with Orton or a rookie.

Looking at these numbers and cap hit, it makes me wish that Dallas would have drafted Dalton or Kaepernick. They liked them both and this would have been the perfect time to trade Romo and start one of these guys. This is what they get for putting ell their eggs in one basket.

With no real FA's left worth signing I'm all for letting Romo play out this year without the extension. If we don't win AT LEAST 1 playoff game then let him walk. I see no real reason to extend at this point.

Because free agency isn't the only way (nor is it even remotely the best way) to improve a team.

If traded, Romo's contract won't void the last 3 years. The new team would owe him 4/52, not crazy but worth thinking about. Dallas would take a cap hit of 14.5m this year. While it would save 2.3m on the cap, it's a big number for someone not on the team.

How much is Brady getting paid for 3 years?

Brady is getting 40m over the next 3 years. He was due 30 for 2 years under his old deal, paid 15m per year. He now gets a 30m signing bonus paid over 2 years and yearly salaries of 1m, 2m and 7m=40m. He has two more years after that at 8m for 2016 and 9m for 2017 which are guaranteed for injury if he is on the team throughout 2014.

If I'm Romo, have to account for whatever savings JJ has in mind from not investing in the OL. That's part of the excuse, Romo can escape the rush therefore we can over come a lack of talent on the front line.
