Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's 50-year-old father, Ramiro, underwent successful prostate surgery Wednesday morning in Chicago and could be released from the hospital as early as Friday evening, according to a source close to the family.
"The surgery went extremely well," said the source.
Romo found out about his father's cancer a few days after the Cowboys' 34-10 victory over the Bears on Sept. 23. The two have played golf together since Romo was a child, and they remain in constant contact.
"You love your Dad. You just want him to be alright," Romo said last month. "It's just part of getting older. It's a step in the path of life."
Ramiro and his wife, Joan, were in Dallas last month for the announcement of their son's six-year, $67.5 million contract extension. The elder Romo did not discuss his illness at the time.
Doctors predicted a quick recovery for Ramiro because the cancer was detected early, and he's in excellent shape. The surgery took place at Northwestern Memorial Hosptial in Chicago, and Ramiro should return to his home in Burlington, Wisc. by Saturday.
"He's doing good. He's a fighter," Romo said following Friday's practice. "I'm like, 'How you doing?' "He's like, 'Fine. Go beat the Commanders.'"
Romo did not think his parents would be able to attend the Thanksgiving Day game, but might in be in Dallas for the Packers game Nov. 29.
