Romo's first half numbers

..............2006.......2007.....2008 (three games)
Rating.......92.3......82.1.....105.0
Comp%.....64.6......63.4.......70.5
YPA...........7.5........7.1........9.7
YPG...........118.......130.......142
Att............15.8......18.3......14.7

So far this season, he's completing a much higher percentage of his passes, for more yards, on fewer attempts.

Compare his first half attempts last year (18.3 per 1st half) to this year's average so far (14.7). He's been able to throw fewer passes, but still get more yards than last year (142-130). This may have something to do with the fact that we are running more in the first half this year.

RB runs/Pass Atts per 1st half
2007: 7.75/18.3
2008: 12.3/14.7

Last year, we passed more than twice as often as we ran in the 1st half. This year so far, there is much better balance.

And we're running more because we're running better. Last year in the 1st half, our RB's gained 495 yards on 124 rushes. This year in the 1st half: 37 rushes for 231 yards.

Avg per rush (first half RB's)
2007: 4.0
2008: 6.2

The improved run game should continue to allow Romo to choose his spots, passing less, but getting more yards.

Considering the way he's been playing he can play even better and the rest of the league should be afraid.

Edit: If those 2007 rushing attempts (7.75) seemed low, it's because I screwed the pooch. I was looking at JJ's total thru 7 games.:

The correct first half RB rushing totals were 173 carries for 681 yards. That's 10.8 rushes per 1st half. So our run/pass ratio wasn't quite as skewed toward the pass, as I had erroneously indicated that it was.

These are the actual numbers:
RB runs/Pass Atts per 1st half
2007: 10.8/18.3
2008: 12.3/14.7

Still we haven't been near as pass-heavy in the first half of games so far this year as we were last year. And with the correction, it turns out we were even worse running the ball in the first half than I thought last year.

Avg per rush (first half RB's)
2007: 3.9
2008: 6.2

I think the fact that MBIII is starting games in the first quarter instead of Julius is a big factor in Tony's improved numbers.
