Jaws: It's about Tony Romo. The Eagles decided to blitz Tony Romo and it didn't work. The Vikings are not a blitzing team, they play cover 2. I think they will force Tony Romo to hold on to the football, jam the Cowboys receivers and this will allow the Vikings pass rush to get going.

Greenberg: Cowboys Offensive Line or Vikings Defensive Line?

Jaws: Clearly the Vikings Defensive Line. As I have gone through the game film of the Cowboys and Eagles, I thought the Cowboys Offensive Line was good but not great. Tony Romo was getting the ball out of his hands and there were many times where he saved the Cowboys Offensive Line.

I usually like Jaws but can never shake the fact that he was Eagle--he's showing his Eagle-envy here

It's a team effort, Jaws. I can remember many instances where Romo had time. Yes he has a quick release, but the boys up front are blocking well. Give them some credit too.

Music to my ears. I can't recite all the games off the top of my head but Tony has done remarkably well against some of the better Cover 2 defenses in recent years. The Bears game on SNF, the Buccaneers on Thanksgiving, and the Commander game where Owens exploded for 3 touchdowns against a pre-dominantly Cover 2 defense are easily memorable. If the line can protect him, I see a big day for Witten and whoever they line up in the slot down the seams. And if the Offensive Line can get any push and get into a rhythm, our Running Backs should have a pretty good day even against that Williams wall with only 7 in the box.

Yeah, our offensive line was only "good" enough to get 5.6 yards per rush over 180 yards in the first game and then 6.3 yards per rush over 190 yards in the second game.

I'm happy with them...

I think he's exaggerating the fact a little, but our O-Line does sometime show weakness in pass protection. The area where I think he is wrong is that our O-Line usually shows weakness against well disguised blitzes. The blitz up the middle where Romo was sacked last week and Andre Gurode stood there and touched nobody comes to mind.

Against a 4 man rush cover 2 team, our O-Line will keep Romo protected. Kosier gets double team help from Gurode, Davis handles his man, you give the tackles help if they need it from a RB or TE, and Romo carves the seams of the zone like a thanksgiving turkey.

The cover 2 shell is a dinosaur at this point in the NFL. It doesn't surprise anybody, and without a great MLB(the Vikings lost theirs) and a great pass rush that can get to the QB, it just gets sliced up.

Jamming? they don't have the CBs to jam. if they do, they will be toast on a few occasions. I think they will try and play cover 2 and austin, witten and crayton are great in finding the dead zone in that scheme and we would need to be patient and dink and dunk our way down the field.

I don't think they will be able to rush Romo with their front 4 alone. allen is a handful and tenacious, but I think we will double him. groude and pat williams are going to be a good match up. davis and kevin williams are also a good match up, but I call those a wash. who is their other end? exactly.

this is going to be a tough tough match up for both defenses. lots of weapons. and I don't buy into Jaws saying Romo saved the OL. when the other team blitzes, then its your QBs job to get the ball out quick. that's what he did. the whole purpose of the blitz is to fool the OL. over load one side or other and get one of your defensive players come free.

this game is going into the 4th quarter.

What about the the last game of the season when Philly played cover 2 the first half and Romo picked them apart?

Jaws is usually pretty good but when the Eagles are involved he is totally unable to really do his job.

Exactly right.

He's a credible student of the game. Unless he's talking about the Eagles.

The his credibility and impartiality goes right down the toilet.

He's must be taking the most recent spanking particularly hard.

Like a certain Eagles poster who's been comspicuously absent from 'dialoging'.

All that jamming the WRs at the LOS and four man rushes means is more 5 step drops for Romo. Garrett and Romo haven't used many in the past few weks because teams have decided to live or die by blitzing Romo. In short, most died. So now the Vikings are going to bring pressure with their front four and play a cover two zone? No problem. Romo is just as efficient slicing up a zone defense as he is exploiting a blitz. I don't have any disillusion that Romo will come out of Minnesota untouched. The Vikes will get to him, but they are going to abandon that four man front cover two defense within the first two series if Romo takes the Cowboys down for two quick scores. At that point the Vikings are playing into the Cowboys' hands.

Well, anybody who has watched the Cowboys over the last 3 1/2 years should know that Romo makes our line look much better than it is in pass protection. Those who have not realized it are in the same group with the Romo bashers because they are not appreciating how good Romo is avoiding the rush.

That said I think they did a decent job against Philly.

Yep.

I remember after the 2006 Season, someone created a thread estimating how many more Sacks opposing defenses would have had against the Cowboys if Drew Bledsoe had remained the starter for the entire Season.

I know the 2006 line is different from the 2009 line but I believe there is some truth in some of what Ron Jaworski stated.

Hey Jaws, how many sacks did McNabb save that "great" Philly OL line from the past two weeks? 5 or 6 at least?

Course, our OL helped our guys rush for 370+ yds the past two weeks vs Philly's great defense. Philly's run game...not so much.

All I know is that if they believe they can pressure Romo with four it will be a long day for the Vikes defense.

So basically, the idea is Romo saved the line. Okay, so what is to stop him from doing it again?

A very long day. We have so many schemes that find ways to protect him, I don't see how they will get any pressure unless they blitz. This should be the most interesting game of the season. I predict another thumping by the Cowboys.
