How would you assess the rookie defensive class?
We all know that DeMarcus Ware had a solid first season, but how would you assess the other defensive rookies? I am sure most of us had high hopes for all of them coming into the season. Here is my assessment.
I was a little disappointed in Spears. I wouldn't dare say he is a bust, but I just expected more from a first round player. He did show signs of greatness at times, but I think he gets distracted at times and becomes lackadaisical. Scouts had him as a pure pass rusher coming into the season, but I really didn't see him getting a lot of pressure during the season. It is a shame that he had that injury in training camp. I think that was a huge set back for him. If he can stay healthy this offseason, I think he will become a solid starter. Final Grade: C-
Chris Canty showed a lot of potential. His physical build allows him to be agile and quick, and I think he will get much better with a full offseason to work with. Remember earlier this year, or last year I should say, we didn't know if he would even be able to play this season because he was drafted with injury concerns. But I see why he was so highly touted as one of the the top defensive players in college before he got hurt. I think he will be a fine player and maybe a pro bowl caliber player for us in the future, and maybe the steal of the 2005 draft. Final Grade: B-
Out of all the draft picks, I was most disappointed in Burnett. He is another rookie that struggled with injuries in the offseason which effected his learning curve. I really don't think he knows what his role is just yet, and I don't know if Parcells knows either. He was great in college, but I get the feeling that he either doesn't care or just doesn't want to be here. Hopefully, we can get a better assessment of his dedication during the offseason by seeing how hard he works. The kid has a load of potential, but that doesn't mean anything if he just sits on it. Again, I would never label him a bust this soon, but the kid needs to get the ball rolling, because in this NFL, players need to be ready to play. Final Grade: D
