Randy Gregory owns a special skill. It’s why the Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the second round. It’s why they expect him to contribute this season. It’s why they gave him No. 94.

It’s also why the rookie pass-rusher already has drawn attention, with two sacks in two preseason games.

“This is what they brought me in for, I think,” Gregory said. “Obviously, I want to be the best overall player I can be, well-rounded, so I’m working on other aspects of my game. But for the most part, I think I’ve done a good job of what they’ve asked me to do.”

The Cowboys were displeased with most of what they saw in a 23-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. In fact, coach Jason Garrett called out his team afterward, saying there were “no excuses” for the Cowboys’ performance.

Gregory, though, served as a bright spot.

In-game statisticians credited him with two tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. He also drew two holding penalties...

Gregory is going to a great player as long as he keeps his head straight and stays out of trouble.

You attribute this wrong. He's got an illness that at 22, he's just learning to deal with. Those marijuana positives are all about him self medicating. His disorder - which is likely not bipolar but more reasonably social anxiety - is easily medicated. However, for most guys these disorders don't emerge until college.

This isn't about him showing discipline. It's about getting a medical disorder under control

Would this be a very active defensive front? Lawrence, Crawford, Hardy, and Gregory

That's your nickel with Mincey rotating in as well.

I'd have loved to see a limpy Rodgers against that last year.

Haven't even seen Ty Crawford or Hardy at their best yet. I'm sure Rodgers would have hated to see even our 2nd unit for this season:

Mincey, Jack Crawford, Russell, Coleman, Gardner

This DLine (when they are all playing in real games) is going to cause headaches for opposing QB's and should make the DB's on our side look much better...can't wait to see it unfold

Basically he has the chance to be what Haley was if he had gotten medical attention early on.

Hoping we go long on the DL. Keep 10 and have 8 active on game day. Fresh legs

Don't confuse him with Haley. Haley is bipolar. Gregory more likely has social anxiety disorder. Different issues.

I have liked what I have seen from Gregory considering he is lining up with 2nd and 3rd string players. During the season when he rotates in it will be with front line players

Whether he is bipolar or not, whether it is social anxiety or not, whether he was self medicating then but now will medicate through doctors.

The point still stands from the other poster.

He has a chance to be a great player...If he can keep his head on straight and stays out of trouble. Whether that means staying on prescribed medication, getting therapy or whatever means it takes to stay out of trouble.

I'm comparing them in the sense of realizing a mental disorder early instead of late.

Defensive ROY? MAYBE
Steal of the draft? Yes.:starspin:

Kind of off topic, but getting him in the second, Collins undrafted, and Byron Jones as a legit 1st...then throw in Wilson...I think this will turn out to be one our best drafts in a very long time (maybe going back to the Dirty Dozen). Then, throw in Swaim and hopefully Green...we just need to get Tony's replacement in place and this team will be cooking with gas for a very long time. Steal of the draft? Yes, I agree. But then this whole draft seems to be full of "steals" for us!

I completely agree. We are building a very strong team to make a sustained run at being one of the top teams in the league. We waited and I think it's here.
