Rookie defensive end showing lots of promise for Cowboys

OXNARD, Calif.
Randy Gregory owns a special skill. It’s why the Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the second round. It’s why they expect him to contribute this season. It’s why they gave him No. 94.
It’s also why the rookie pass-rusher already has drawn attention, with two sacks in two preseason games.
“This is what they brought me in for, I think,” Gregory said. “Obviously, I want to be the best overall player I can be, well-rounded, so I’m working on other aspects of my game. But for the most part, I think I’ve done a good job of what they’ve asked me to do.”
The Cowboys were displeased with most of what they saw in a 23-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. In fact, coach Jason Garrett called out his team afterward, saying there were “no excuses” for the Cowboys’ performance.
Gregory, though, served as a bright spot.
In-game statisticians credited him with two tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. He also drew two holding penalties...
