Hopefully he does contribute, but I still think we reached.

Who cares about 'reaching?' Do you think anyone would have cared if their team 'reached' and took Tom Brady in the 3rd rd instead of the the 6th rd? Same with Joe Montana - if a team took him in the 1st or 2nd, would anyone be complaining of 'reaching?' I can't recall 100%, but some probably even complained at the time that Larry Allen was a reach.

As Parcells said, "You have to separate your judgement of the player from when/if he was drafted." It is hard enough finding good players in the draft let alone, trying to get greedy and worrying about Mel Kiper grading your draft 3 days later as poor because you reached.

The thing that to this day amazes me is a player comes to training camp picks up the system
executes the plays on the field and plays at the level or better then the round that he was picked
at and fans say "yea but we could have gotten him at a lower level!

Who gives a crap and how do you know ? you nor I know
we went through this with Fredbeard and he is playing above where we selected him at. Bazaaro

I've always said give young blood a chance. They are eager, don't have the wear and tear, more stamina, coachable, and have a chance of being a diamond in the rough. That's why I'm excited about this season. Seeing the development of our youngins!

This looks like more rock turning than anything else. If he's taking those same snaps against San Fransisco and actually impacting this defense, we might have a story.

They're just getting him ready because they want Durant at WIL and McClain is gimpy.

I'd love to see the guy turn out. He still looks meaty and unathletic to me in that practice vid. Just watching try to catch that ball is painful. But he sounds like a guy who's willing to put in the time and who knows his responsibilities. Sometimes that overcomes the athletic limitations.

Reaching in the sense of financial implications basically went out of the window with the rookie wage scale.

Well, reaching matters. You want I get good value wherever you can. It's just a lot less important than hitting on the guys you take, wherever you get them.

That may be so but it didn't in terms of getting good players to help your team improve. If you can get a good player were you drafted Hitchens and then still get Hitchens where he was predicted to go (7th or UDFA) then you help your team more. This is all predicated on Hitchens actually being a good player.

I am really starting to hate all the day to day jumping around in the LB corps. Why can't we let three of these guys at least learn a position and stay there.

They are expecting a lot of injuries.

Not when you are going off a false presumption.

You probably thought Fred was a reach also.

You can look at the 2009 draft to see what happens when you don't "reach" for the player that you really want.

The Cowboys top preference in the 2009 draft by far was Max Unger. They ended up with a total of 12 picks in that draft. Max Unger got picked just a few spots ahead of the Cowboys 2nd round selection. He's gone on to be a Pro Bowl player while the entire Cowboys draft class is gone and only 3 players remain in the NFL.

They could have traded ALL of their 12 picks to get into the first round and "reach" for Unger. They would have been much more successful than what actually happened in that draft.

I know. But I'm expecting a lot of missed assignments early in the season because no one is truly focused on one true position (except maybe McClain).

That has nothing to do with my point and if you're trying to justify reaching for players as a good thing, then well we will just agree to disagree
