This thread isn't so much about Dak or Zeke. This is a post about rookies in general that seems to apply to Dak, Zeke, Brown, and of course Malik Collins. I think the problem with some teams historically, including the Dallas Cowboys specifically, is that they create a culture of thinking that rookies can't contribute or lead a team. That filters down to the player and they usually fulfill that view of them. They start believing that they will falter at some point, and then they do.
Early success helps cement the personal view that a player can dominate like they did in college, or they cant. I think Dak's struggles in college with a bad team prepared him to succeed in the NFL. He believes he can do it because he carried his largely talent-less team on his shoulders. In the NFL he has more time than he has probably ever had to make a play. He was forced to process information quickly in college because he didn't have time to spare. He has a tough mental makeup.
The one thing that really concerns me is that if Dak gets supplanted by Romo, he may lose that edge he currently has. He believes he is going to win every game, and so do his teammates. Elliott believes he can dominate because he played at Ohio State and won the national championship. The expectations on him were immense, and he is embracing them. He expects to win, to succeed and to win the rushing title. So far it is looking like he wiil.
Anthony Brown expects to play well, and isn't making rookie mistakes. Malik Collins is doing the same. Part of their success is probably attributable to the mindset that if Dak and Zeke can do it, so can I. Confidence is such a strong part of a player's performance it cannot be understated. Look at what health and confidence are doing for Mo's play this year.
It's not just about the rookies. When doubt starts creeping into a player;'s mind is is almost as insideous as cancer. Rodgers from Green bay is a perfect example. His skills haven't eroded yet, but his confidence is at an all time low. Instead of believing he can win, his body language yesterday indicated that he had lost the confidence he had, that edge, and as a result he and his team cratered. Make no mistake, the Packers could have won the game yesterday, if they had not repeatedly turned the ball over. Lack of confidence played a huge role in that. Defensive coordinators can cause that to creep in too, with scheme.
