Roster Competition Can Build a Winner for Cowboys
http://cowboyszone.com/2017/05/roster-competition-can-build-a-winner-for-cowboys.html

...Another thing Garrett preaches is competition, something the Cowboys have done a great job of building in the last few years. In 2017, the depth of the team is outstanding and there will be competition all over the field.

Now, the offense looks pretty much set, but there will be competition in training camp. Starting spots at left guard and right tackle will be up for grabs, with La’el Collins, Chaz Green, Jonathan Cooper and Byron Bell trying to lock down two starting roles. These will be some of the best battles this summer and it should make each player better. Those who don’t start will have worked hard to secure a valuable role as a backup, hopefully without much drop-off.

However, those are not the only places on offense where there will be competition. Backup running back seems set with Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris but that is not necessarily true. The Cowboys drafted Ryan Switzer and added Jahad Thomas out of Temple as a rookie free agent, to battle for a place on the roster. McFadden isn’t the model of health and Morris seemed to fall out of favor with the team late last year, so neither is safe behind Ezekiel Elliott. There will be a fight for carries...

The way it seems to be shaping up, I'm not sure there's as much competition at RB as this articles leads the reader to believe.

-#1 is set. Obviously.

-I think McFadden, with his ability to catch passes as well as pick up blitzes, slides nicely into the role of a reliable 3rd down back.

-Really, the only question might be if we keep Morris again for insurace, or do we fill out the roster with a young guy who can also play special teams? I'm hoping for the latter.

It's Morris vs UDFA(s). Switzer does not impact the 3rd RB. Switzer would only be relevant to a possible 4th RB.

I see the point, as Murray has been a very productive running back in the NFL...think that pride just died?

Switzer may have a positive effect for play-action, blitzes, and challenging tight ends for 3rd down plays.

I really think Rod Smith will be our third back. Although he's not much of a tailback, he can be a three-down back if needed, plus he can play fullback and is a great special-teammer.

I could see us keeping Morris instead because of McFadden's troubles with injury, but Morris offers us little other than insurance as the third back. So I think the competition is between McFadden and injuries. If he stays healthy the entire preseason, the Cowboys are more likely to cancel their insurance policy.

Don't worry guys, we can afford to let McFadden and Morris walk because we made a great pick in Darius Jackson last year. He looked fantastic in camp and is a great compliment to Zeke. We should be set at the RB position for years to come, as we have 2 great backs and we would never do something as stupid as releasing a promising player for a single game roster spot for someone like Emmett Cleary.

Wait......

If only he had actually looked fantastic in camp, we might still have him.

I wouldn't be so sure.
I'm certain. The possible 4th RB will be eliminated because of Switzer but the 3rd RB would have to be able to function as a blocker.

After McFadden returned last season they had 4 RBs.

I think Morris was inactive so Dunbar was always #3 after McFadden returned.

Dunbar was a legit blocker. Switzer is not in terms of RB.
