ok, as most of you zoners know, roster cut down is to 75 on september 1st
then full cut down on september 4th;

as usual the dallas cowboys wait to cut all of their players down the last day and the last 24 hours before cut down, while other teams cut their roster down 2 to 3 days ahead

so in essence, we are left getting no really good players, while some other teams that have cut their roster down, pick up the best players left in cutdowns

so what should you zoners think we should do and get the cowboys management to do?

If those players are that great, they wouldn't be being cut. Having the best practice squad in the league isn't going to help.

sometimes you find a player that a team cant keep

remember in 1975? the steelers cut preston pearson and we got him for league price of $100 dollars

now and then you get a player that a team wanted to keep

if you watched the titans cowboys game, you might have heard aikman and other guy say that the titans roster was stacked, and teams are waiting to pick up players that they cant keep on their roster;

I am no expert, but shouldn't waiting until the last moment allow us to better know which players are cutable and which players wont make it through waivers? Also can we talk with players we are interested in even if we haven't cut down our roster?

You are stretching the facts a little. Not every team makes their cuts 2 to 3 days ahead of the deadline. Some teams do it and others wait until the last minute.

see if you wait till the last minute, you have to wait 24 hours before you can sign a player, thats why to me, its better to release players earlier then you can sign a player if another player is released

Many other teams do as well and Dallas like others has already made some moves.

I thought Preston Pearson was traded for. I kinda remember that, because that was very rare for the Cowboys back then.

And all the Cowboys have to do is have a few slots open between the start of teams cutting players. It is not like they are going to pick up 8 new guys.

No Joe, the worst teams from last year get first crack at the waiver wire. They just waive or release one of their own if they get a claim.

There is a 24 hour rule, but I think that it applies to the final cut and signing guys for the practice squad. You don't have to wait if you are signing someone to your 53 man roster.

From what I remember all teams have 24 hours to make a claim, but the claim doesn't go through until the 24 hours are up and then the claim goes to the team with the worst record from last year. Similar to the draft.

The one exception is a guy like Duke Preston who already has 4 years of service. So he became a free agent after 24 hours instead of being on the waiver wire.

That makes sense. After final cuts, if you do claim someone, you have to put them on the 53 man roster. You can't claim someone and put them on the practice squad. Everyone becomes a free agent if they make it through waivers.

Yeah, the practice squad guys are free agents so its up to them who they want to sign up with, but they usually sign with their current team so they don't have to move or learn a new playbook.
