When do they begin? Has roster cuts always taken this long to begin or has the format for reducing preseason rosters recently changed?

Damn there is going to be a lot of good players cut. We are going to fill our enemies' teams with ammo! :(

2nd cut...9/1/07 to 53 players.
That is a lot of players in just three days.

The fantasy football guys will  for a couple of days.

It is definitely a lot.

320 players will be cut by August 28th. Then just 3 days later 704 more are out of work.

At least other teams actually want players off our roster for once. I remember a few years ago if the Cowboys cut a player he'd be bagging groceries in a week.

When I look at the guys on the roster right now I see a lot more then 53 guys I'd like to see make this team. Hopefully some can land on the PS but that doesn't make them safe.

I think guys like Remi, Bowen, Berger, Nate Jones, K. Long, Urban and Jamel Richardson are all possibilities to make 53-man rosters else where if they don't make it here.

But, you're right, it is speculative at best.

So does a player have to be officially cut and pass through a waiver system before he can be signed to the practice squad?

They would have been had they been in camp with those other teams -- for the most part -- unless you are talking guys like CBs or ST players who don't need to learn about the various schemes, then most teams prefer the guys they've had for 10 weeks to someone they don't know

Yes, when a team cuts a player he goes through waivers. Where another team can claim him. However when he's placed on the practice squad he can still be signed by another team, they just have to sign him to the 53 man roster though.

Sometimes you're right. But the bottoms of rosters get turned over quite a bit all over the league. Salary cap and other considerations factor in, but more often than not, a player's ability and/or acombination of potential and experience are given priority over player proximity.
