am i the only one who thinks this was possibly one of the worst calls in football? can you imagine finally coming out and playing hard and getting flagged for it?

that was the worst call of the year, or at least in the running for it.

fyi - the call was that newman hit an exposed receiver who could have caught the ball if not slammed by newman where roy caught the ball for a returned TD.
Watch the NFL channel this week when the head of the refs comes on and explains why they made that call. He always comes up with some weak explanation. NEVER are the refs wrong or he admits they blew it.

Actually it looked like TNew lead with his shoulder. Anyone got a clip?

My question is...would there have been a foul if he had caught the ball? At that point he is no longer defenseless?

Newman absolutely lead with his shoulder, but his helmet still made contact with a defenseless player's helmet. This is a 15 yard penalty.

He's pretty much defenseless until he lands safely on the ground, by rule, regardless of how close the ball is.

This one is actually in the rule books and quite clear, so I doubt they'll bother asking him.

Ok, couple of things here. First, they didn't call leading with or hitting with the helmet like they have done many times with roy. They called hitting a defenseless player.

Second, please please explain to me how Tnew could have safely hit him as he was 3 feet in the air. Tnew turned totally sideways and purposely hit him with the shoulder.

Furreys head actually came down on Newmans head...after the hit. after he got rocked.

If they are going to call the penalty..I guarantee you they could have called it a dozen more times on both sides of the ball. Helmets are going to hit in the game of football...even when there is no intent. Which is the case earlier today.

The Personal Foul 15 yard facemask against Sean Taylor on the blocked FG was particularly brutal. Top 5 IMO.

that one I at least understand -- the ST players usually know to take down the opposing player however they can in that situation -- the refs know that so they'll always go more extreme with calls on a play like that - that one is on Kosier - he really shouldn't have let go.

Illegal hit of a defenseless player, that pretty much covers it.

I can't really say how other players manage to not have helmet to helmet contact when they hit defenseless receivers and quarterbacks. I just know it's against the rules.

Any contact. Intent is irrelevant.

Helmets hit all the time, just not as often as you seem to think when in the act of trying to catch or breakup a forward pass.

Considering the way the game turned out, I wish TNew would have REALLY nailed him.
