Victor Cotto of Raiderfans.net reports that the Raiders will sign Unrestricted Free Agent quarterback Jeff Garcia (Eagles). This move has been rumored for several days, and it looks to be true.
Garcia will likely be the starter for at least the beginning of the 2007 season while Andrew Walter and any quarterback who is drafted will take some time to learn. This move gives the Raiders a solid veteran leader at the quarterback position, which is something that has been lacking since the days of Rich Gannon.
If the organization still views Andrew Walter as the quarterback of the future, this is a good move to give him time to regroup from the unmitigated disaster that was the Tom Walsh offense, and relearn the game which is something that Jerry MacDonald of the Oakland Tribune reports that insiders say that Walter needs. If the organization has lost faith in Walter, they will likely draft either JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn and allow either of them a year behind Garcia to learn the pro game. Either way this move gives the Raiders a one to two year starter who is familiar with the offensive coordinator and has shown a tendency to overachieve.
This move also gives a glimpse of the type of offense that Lane Kiffin will be running in 2007. Gone will be the seven step drop and long bomb every down that was the essence of the failed Tom Walsh experiment, and in its place there will be more shorter routes and quarterback roll outs which are the type of plays where Garcia has found the bulk of his success.
No terms have been released for the deal.
