Gottcha. But if we sign Barber long term, there is no way we spend the money on Dmac to be a comp back. Too much money to be sitting on the bench.

I dont think that 5 years/$30 mil or so is too much for Barber.
I dont think that it will affect Jerry and his DMac syndrome.

I mentioned this in another thread.... its a two back system NFL world nowadays. Times are changing... actually they have changed.

More money is spent on BOTH backs nowadays.

So the Cowboys would devote $60 million to their running back by committee?

I can't see that happening.

I've seen two-back systems, but none where both were that high-priced.

I go about it a bit differently.

You push for the contract before the draft, so you have a better idea of what your needs are going into the draft.

IF Barber is willing to sign a contract you can live with, then you sign it and you know that you have a major need filled and the necessity of drafting a "starting-caliber" back goes down dramatically.

If, however, Barber rejects the offer on the table, then you know that you may have a hole looming at his position and you can then draft accordingly... and then you have the leverage you're looking for with Barber to sign the reasonable deal.

I think you have the leverage NOW, with the possibility of drafting the premier back, so that's when you negotiate.

After the draft, if we've missed on signing a competitive back, MBIII would have tremendous leverage.

This is a good move if true and if Jerry negotiated on his terms, which I think is likely.

Right - but the reports are that Jerry made his opening offer to MBIII, but MBIII wanted to be paid like LT.

OK - so don't you already have your answer?

Why would Jerry then re-negotiate to a higher number before the draft? As you said, he has no leverage to apply right now.

It doesn't make sense (unless Jerry and Red are absolutely convinced that MBIII is the answer and can carry the load as a featured back).

I'm really hesistant to do this and i'm not sure what the forum rules are regarding rumors. Let me apologize in advance if i'm violating forum regulations and please feel free to delete at your discretion Mods.

My best friend is in the bar business in Dallas and his buddy apparently owns a bar at which a number of Cowboys hang out, including MBIII. I just got a text from my friend saying that his buddy told him that the Cowboys have reached a deal with MBIII and that it is a done deal. Apparently his buddy heared it from MBIII directly. I don't know his buddy and i can't vouch for him, but my best friend has never let me down.

Again, take it for what it's worth. As the title indicates, it is just a rumor.

hey - as long as you have RUMOR on there, i think everyone appreciates the info! here's to hoping we got him wrapped up!
