Just for a minute, let’s assume that all NFL owners and personnel guys are rational, intelligent human beings who are relatively successful at their jobs.
Making that jump in logic, how can there possibly be substantiated rumors that the Cowboys are seriously considering a draft day trade up into the top slot in order to draft Arkansas RB Darren McFadden? The deal, as it is rumored, would be along the lines of Dallas’ first two draft picks, and RB Marion Barber in exchange for the top pick, which Dallas would then use on McFadden.
Okay, where to start on this. Well, first off, let’s talk strictly about the chances that McFadden ends up being better than Barber will be. Whatdya thinking here; 50-50? If that? I think the pro-McFadden argument would be that if he turns out to be the next Barry Sanders, he’s going to single handedly win you more games than Barber could with his tough running and consistency. Fine, but if the Cowboys try to justify this deal under the premise that they are trading for a 22 year old Barry Sanders, they better be ready to deal with the consequences.
Now, on top of that, there are two first round draft picks (picks 22 and 28) rumored to be available to trade. The outdated draft pick value chart thinks that the number one pick is more valuable than both the 22nd and 28th picks combined, but in the average draft year, isn’t the team with two late first rounders going to pull a much better haul than the team with the first overall pick? And again, what if either of those picks ends up being a player that has a better career than McFadden?
If Jeff Ireland/Bill Parcells end up fleecing Jerry Jones out of the 22nd and 28th picks, I think we have to pull Jones from the category of GM discussed at the top of the article. If Barber is involved in the trade, then even a 22 year old Barry Sanders couldn’t make the deal fair for both sides.
The most unbalanced trade in my experience with the NFL was the draft day deal that sent Eli Manning to New York, and Phillip Rivers, the pick that became Shawne Merriman, and the pick that became Nate Kaeding to San Diego. At least that didn’t totally cripple the side that got screwed in this deal, as evidenced by Super Bowl XLII. This proposed deal would surpass the lopsidedness of this 2004 version by about double.
As Mike Florio over at PFT writes, “It would be the flip side of the Herschel Walker trade for the Cowboys.“
