Gotta be careful around water in humid warm areas, similar kind of infection cost a Georgia woman both her arms and part of a leg a couple of years ago.

I think it's more common along the coast. Hopefully, it will scare everyone away.

Things like this are the reason one should have either some home grown fresh garlic or properly made garlic powder in one's first aid kit when tramping around stagnant water. The article did not indicate what kind of bacteria was involved but the allicin in your own home-grown garlic or garlic powder will kill all bacteria on contact, according to published studies, even the most resistant strains like MRSA and the bacteria cannot become resistant to it because it kills in a different way than antibiotics. It works well in first aid and can prevent a small scratch from becoming acute and avoid tragic things like this man and others. If a person gets a cut or scrape crush and add it to a little water to dilute ie and rub on the affected area to kill all bacteria there. If one does not add enough water, it can burn.

Major pharmaceutical companies are now in the process of developing patentable life forms of GMO garlic that they can charge whatever they want as they will own that particular cultivar and no one else can grow it. Many medicines developed from these GMO garlics will become the new miracle medicines and receive enthusiac approval but they will be expensive. When that happens remember you heard it first here. If you grow your own and know how to process it in different ways you would be surprised at all the things it can be used for.

When you get back to civilization let the doctors take over but if this little trick can help some make it back, that's what it's really all about. Herbal meds have their place, especially out in the boonies.
