Stephen Jones says Cowboys' starters at safety are probably on the team right now, and you know who he means

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team could very well add a safety in free agency or the draft, but that it’s likely the two starters are on the team now.

“We may get some insurance there ... We’ve got some players to draft and college free agents to get, but we do think our two young guys could start for us,” Jones said Monday from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

The “two young guys” are, of course, fourth-year veteran Barry Church and 2012 fourth-round pick Matt Johnson. But combined, they appeared in only three games last year – and that was all Church. Johnson spent the year sidelined by hamstring problems, and Church suffered an Achilles tear in Week 3.

So Jones said the Cowboys do want to cover themselves with a veteran, if possible.

Lol wow.

I hope Barry Church is on the juice because I don't see him playing at a high level next season after coming off that injury.

These guys have really become a BPA drafting team.
As a result, the last three years have had fewer major busts....though the injury bug kind of delayed evaluation of last year's crop.

Don't let need completely overwhelm you drafting to where you are passing on potential superstars to get players to plug holes.

I they draft a safety early, I'm fine with it as long as that player is in the top tier remaining on their board at the time.

What is with he misleading titles lately? How does "we have two guys who could start for us" equate to "our starting safeties are on our roster"?

Yes. Obviously, Dallas has two guys it likes and would like to start, but that's different than saying the starting safeties are on the roster.

I'm not really worried about Church. Most achilles tendon injuries are no where near as serious as they used to be thanks to recent advancements in surgery and rehab techniques. Terrell Suggs was playing football five months after tearing his. Church was hurt so early in the season he'll have more than enough time to rehab and is reportedly already working out heavily at the Ranch.

The other safety spot is a clown car on fire.

Suggs has to be juicing. Didn't he come back from two major injuries last season?

Leon Hall also came back from an achilles tear last year. Greg Ellis tore his in November of 2006, and had his best year in 2007 with 12.5 sacks. The fact that Church was out of his cast by early November and was able to begin a full range of rehab shows this probably wasn't that significant of a tear.

And Ray Lewis made it back from a torn tricept muscle in like what, 5 or 6 weeks?

Half that Raven team is probably juicing.:laugh2:

Not disagreeing with you, but Suggs tore his achilles and his biceps and still played... that doesn't seem normal to me :laugh2:

Wouldn't put it past the entire Ravens team to be on the deer juice. They had the 2nd healthiest offense in the NFL in Football Outsiders Adjusted Games Lost (FWIW, Over the 11-year span of FO's injury database, offensive Adjusted Games Lost has exhibited the strongest relationship with wins and total DVOA). In 2011, they had the best total AGL despite playing a roster full of oldies.

But one of the reasons Suggs came back so quickly is it was only a partial tear.

Guys when will you all understand the art of PR?

They are going to say they are comfortable with Free Starting same for the safeties, same with the guards, same with whoever.. Because we won't be able to cover all bases so of course he is going to say that these guys are capable of starting.. I don't think that is indicative of what they will do in the draft
