“We may get some insurance there ... We’ve got some players to draft and college free agents to get, but we do think our two young guys could start for us,” Jones said Monday from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

Do many of you guys actually read the articles or just the headline? Headlines are a lot of times complete BS as in this case.

Stephen Jones had a report out last month indicating that safety is the biggest need we have on defense.

In this report he is saying that we have our 2 starters and may add insurance when our veteran starter has now been released after that first report.

Whatever.

Actually his stance hasn't changed, just the slant on how it's being reported.

These guys have really become a BPA drafting team.
As a result, the last three years have had fewer major busts....though the injury bug kind of delayed evaluation of last year's crop.

Don't let need completely overwhelm you drafting to where you are passing on potential superstars to get players to plug holes.

I they draft a safety early, I'm fine with it as long as that player is in the top tier remaining on their board at the time.

BPA all the way baby.

Aka smokescreen about not wanting Vaccaro.

Nothing else.

I'm beginning to fear that they jump ahead of Rams to secure him.

Lol wow.

I hope Barry Church is on the juice because I don't see him playing at a high level next season after coming off that injury.

Why? Laron Landry was a probowler this past year after having the same injury twice in two consecutive years and ignoring doctorslike suggestions by not getting surgery... times have changed man. Acls don't always need 2a years, Tommy johns no longer ruins a pitchers career... medical breakthroughs have been nuts.

"If there is a need on defense to me the biggest need is going to be safety," Jones said. "You got Church coming off an Achilles and obviously we really like everything we saw in Matt Johnson other than he couldn’t get healthy. We still don’t know about him but we like him a lot and we would still spend a fourth round pick on him if not higher knowing what we know. But when you got two young guys coming off injuries you can’t count on that."
There is no slant adjustment, Stephen made 2 different statements, AKA was correct. "Biggest need" <> "We may get some insurance there". Of course, few of his statements have much relevance at this time of the season.

Not disagreeing with you, but Suggs tore his achilles and his biceps and still played... that doesn't seem normal to me :laugh2:

Plus Suggs doesn't have to cover 4.3 guys in space.

Church is going to struggle. I'm a fan of his game but I trust no DB coming off that injury.

Suggs has to be juicing. Didn't he come back from two major injuries last season?
He never "came back" from the bicep thing, he just played with it.

Stephen Jones says Cowboys' starters at safety are probably on the team right now, and you know who he means

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team could very well add a safety in free agency or the draft, but that it’s likely the two starters are on the team now.

“We may get some insurance there ... We’ve got some players to draft and college free agents to get, but we do think our two young guys could start for us,” Jones said Monday from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

The “two young guys” are, of course, fourth-year veteran Barry Church and 2012 fourth-round pick Matt Johnson. But combined, they appeared in only three games last year – and that was all Church. Johnson spent the year sidelined by hamstring problems, and Church suffered an Achilles tear in Week 3.

So Jones said the Cowboys do want to cover themselves with a veteran, if possible.

Means little right now, just off season talk. He is not going to promote a player who is not on the team and not going to show lack of confidence in those who are on the team. It would serve no propose to say Church and Johnson can't do the job. However if the situation presents itself and they can find what they feel is an upgrade then they will do so.

Off season is not about opening your soul up to the fans it is not lying it is just off season no need to bruise egos or hurt the confidence of players currently on the team

Back to the talk at hand and not juicing...disappointed in the statements. As we've talked ad nauseum, we have always been short in the O-line and Safety department and EVERY year the talks turn to this...and it never gets addressed PROPERLY. Not that it isn't addressed but not properly. Especially in the new D...safety is key. That is great if those 2 work out but depending on them is another story.

Leon Hall came back 100% in less time than Church will have to rehab. Church was out of his cast and rehabing after 5 weeks, and is already participating in full offseason drills, indicating it wasn't a major tear.. It's not 1993 anymore.

More quotes from that interview:

"We think our two starters probably are on our team," team executive vice president Stephen Jones said Monday. "We may get some insurance there, just like we did with Ernie (Sims), and then of course we’re going to draft. We’ve got some players to draft and college free agents to get, but we do think our two young guys could start for us."

The issues for the Cowboys is when and if Church will be ready to fully practice with the team and whether Johnson can remain healthy.

"That’s why we’re going to have to have insurance at the end of the day," Jones said. "But we really liked what we saw and think (Johnson) could be that guy for us. Obviously we think a lot about Church, but he’s coming off injury. It’s not perfect, but other teams have to hang out places too with their cap situations. That’s where we are with it. At some point it wouldn’t surprise me if we end up with a veteran safety, if not one in the draft, as well, somewhere. That doesn’t mean we take one out of need, but if we see one at the right place, right time, and he fits well where it is, you’ve got to look at it."

No it isn't, the insurance remark refers to signing a veteran in free agency and with their cap situation is was always going to be a cheap alternative. When he was talking about biggest need he was referring to the draft and his reasoning had to do with both safeties coming off injuries. He even referred to Church's injury again in the recent interview and mentioned Johnson "could" be the guy:

First interview
But when you got two young guys coming off injuries you can’t count on that."

Second interview
"But we really liked what we saw and think (Johnson) could be that guy for us. Obviously we think a lot about Church, but he’s coming off injury.

Simple really, Jones thinks they have two possible starters in Church and Johnson, however, they will draft at least one S and probably sign a Vet late in FA for insurance.
