Nick Saban has accepted an offer from Alabama to coach the Crimson Tide and left the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, two weeks after declaring "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

Saban told team owner Wayne Huizenga of his intentions via telephone and then informed all of his coaches by speakerphone that he was leaving to accept the Alabama position, a source told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

But as of late Wednesday morning, Saban was not yet headed to Tuscaloosa for a formal introduction.

"All indications are that he's coming, but I know they're not in the air yet," an Alabama athletic department official told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach.

Alabama made its formal offer to Saban on Monday after rumors swirled for weeks that the Crimson Tide were pursuing the former LSU coach. The offer, believed to run from eight to 10 years, is worth $35 million to $40 million, and includes many variables, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Monday.

Saban had issued repeated denials that he was interested in coaching at Alabama, one of the most high-profile and high-pressure college coaching jobs in the country. He leaves the Dolphins with three years left on a deal worth approximately $4.5 million a year.

Alabama began looking for a coach after firing Mike Shula on Nov. 27. The Tide finished the season 6-7, losing to Oklahoma State in the Independence Bowl.

On Tuesday, Saban asked for and recevied more time from Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga to make a decision.

Huizenga remained optimistic Tuesday that Saban would return to Miami, and gave him until 10 a.m. Wednesday to make a decision.

"I'm hoping he's leaning on staying," Huizenga was quoted as saying in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "I like Nick a lot and hope he's going to stay. I'm not upset. You just have to play this thing through."

Huizenga has said he received repeated assurances from Saban late in the season that he would return in 2007. And Saban issued frequent public denials of interest in moving to Tuscaloosa, such as on Dec. 21, when he said: "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

I really thought he was gonna take it.He is a coach for hire you can bid enough and get him. Plus after the whole daunte culpepper deal all was not rosey down there anyways.

I was privileged to see Bo Jackson play one time live while he was at Auburn. A deity among mortals. I was mesmerized.

how many times did he deny this recently?

Whatever tiny sliver of credibility Saban may have had is now completely gone.

Like owners who say the coach’s job is not in jeopardy and then fire him the next day? Saban has as much credibility as anyone else in the NFL. Evidently Alabama offer was good enough to lure him back to the college ranks. Hard part for him will be every thing he does in Alabama will be compared to Bear Bryant which Bama fans can't seem to let go. Even when Stallings won the National Championship game I heard Bama fans say well Bear would have done it better.

I saw him play as well,, many times,, he was quite possibly the most talented RB i have ever seen. I wish he had just concentrated on playing football. Al Davis, said Bo was the best athlete he has ever been around. He was amazing.

he didn't flat out deny it like many accuse him of, he did that earlier in the speculation but as times passed he wasvery careful about his words. I plead the fifth kinda crap and I am not talking about that, this is about the dolphins ra ra garbage.

It was nice of him to screw the Dolphins at QB before he left.

Saban would've been STUPID not to take the gig. Guaranteed money, a 8-10 year contract vs the year-to-year, what have you done for me lately NFL gig. I'd take the college gig every time. You think Bill Callahan or Pete Carroll are itching to get back to the pro game? Well, Saban was right to deny it, hell his NFL season just ended last week.

You mean you don't like the combo of Harrington, Culpepper, and Lemon?

Sounds like a dish doesn't it?

I'm not surprised, as I'd always heard that Saban didn't like the pro game as much as he did college...

But from a Cowboys perspective, I'm disappointed. This creates another NFL opening, and If Parcells leaves, we might be one more step down in the pecking order for the best candidate available.

Speaking of that, JFE said on her show this morning that when Jerry and Parcells re-did their contract last year, they put in there that Parcells has until five days after the Super Bowl to decide if he's coming back or not. That would be, what, February 9th?

I guess I'm biased, but I'd put the Cowboys higher in the pecking order than the Dolphins job, if BP leaves.

Their personnel is a mess, and the Boys have some good young talent and some offensive firepower.

But then again, I'd put the Cowboys as the best gig in the league.:)
