INDIANAPOLIS – Johnny Manziel didn’t quite measure up at the NFL Scouting Combine.
After promising the Houston Chronicle earlier this month he would check in at 6 foot “on the dot,” the former Texas A&M star came up a quarter of an inch short of his desired height Friday morning at Lucas Oil Stadium.
In typical Manziel fashion, he adjusted quickly, telling a media horde that rivaled the gathering for Manti Te’o's news conference on the exact same spot last year that it didn’t matter because he plays “like I’m 10 feet tall.”
Coming off as composed and confident without even a hint of a smile, Manziel also assured the gathering he’s solely focused these days on his pursuit of NFL excellence, that his reputation as man-about-town “Johnny Football” has been shed.
“This is life now,” said Manziel, who weighed in a 207 pounds. “This is a job for me. I’m taking it very seriously…It’s football 24-7.”
But what about all the celebrities he’s rubbed shoulders with the last two years? All the hop-scotching across the country he did to enjoy bright lights and good times?
“I’m really just a small-town kid,” Manziel said, pointing out Kerrville is just a “town of 20,000.”
Falling just short of 6 foot shouldn’t hurt Manziel’s draft standing as a top-10 pick, especially after another short quarterback – the Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson – just hoisted the Lombardi Trophy as a Super Bowl champion.
What NFL teams mainly want to know about Manziel is whether he can stay in the pocket and win games with his arm, eyes and brain.
No problem there, Manziel said.
“I’m just looking forward to showing up all the people that say I’m just an improviser,” he said.
