OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys rookie wide receiver Terrance Williams admits to being nervous at the start of camp.

Understandably, his anxiety resulted in dropped passes and missed assignments.

But with one week of camp under his belt, the third-round pick from Baylor is starting to find a comfort zone.

That was evident with his practice Sunday, which included the Blue-White scrimmage for young players and backups.

“I think I’m getting better and better each day,” said Williams, who had a nice diving catch during an 11-on-11 session and caught a touchdown pass on a slant in the seven-on-seven period. “The goal is to keep taking steps forward and not taking any steps backward.”

Williams said his nervousness stemmed mainly from being in an NFL training camp for the first time.

“But I got used to it and just got better day by day,” he said. “I just keep paying attention to what the coaches and players tell me. Do my job at a fast pace. Now that I’m getting more used to it, I can play with a whole lot more confidence.”

Williams’ worst moment came when he dropped an easy pass on a crossing route early in camp. Seconds after the miscue, Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten shouted at Williams, “Damn it, 83.”

“I have high standards for myself and that dropped pass really did kind of bring me down,” Williams said. “But that’s why (starting wide receivers) Dez (Bryant) and Miles (Austin) and my coach do a great job of telling me just keep going onto the next one. I got to the sideline and they said, ‘Just let it go.’ I just let that day pass and used the next day for a better day.”

Williams is vying with Dwayne Harris for the No. 3 job behind Bryant and Austin.

“If the third-receiver spot happens to be mine, then I would be happy with that,” he said. “But I’m just focusing on being the best teammate I can be and giving Dez and Miles breaks. I just want to help this team win.”
