IRVING – The Cowboys on Monday began practicing for their season opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 8 without defensive end Anthony Spencer.

Coach Jason Garrett said last week he was hopeful Spencer would be at practice Monday, but he apparently is still rehabbing from the arthroscopic knee surgery he had July 25.

With their defensive line decimated by injuries, including the season-ending torn Achilles that key backup Tyrone Crawford suffered on the first day of training camp, the Cowboys can ill afford not to have Spencer on the field chasing Eli Manning. With the exception of perennial Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware and solid tackle Jason Hatcher, the defensive front consists of unproven youngsters like Kyle Wilber and Ben Bass and journeymen such George Selvie, Landen Cohen and Nick Hayden.

Spencer had a career-high 11.0 sacks last season.

The Cowboys added Edgar Jones via a trade with Kansas City over the weekend, but it’s uncertain how much help he can provide at defensive end.

Other players that weren’t on the practice field Monday morning include RB Lance Dunbar, S Danny McCray, S Eric Frampton, TE Dante Rosario and S Micah Pellerin.

On a positive note, Ronald Leary shared reps with Mackenzy Bernadeau at left guard during the portion of practice open to the media Monday morning. Leary underwent knee surgery last month, but the club is hopeful he can play against the Giants.

It’s still uncertain whether the Cowboys are serious about playing right tackle Doug Free at right guard. He took reps Monday morning at both guard and tackle.
