Saturday was a tough day for the Dallas Cowboys’ 2012 draft class.

In cutting 21 players and making other moves to meet the NFL’s 53-man limit, the Cowboys released two 2012 draftees (receiver Danny Coale and linebacker Caleb McSurdy) and placed another (safety Matt Johnson) on season-ending injured reserve for the second straight year.

Because of injuries, Coale, McSurdy and Johnson never logged a regular-season snap as rookies. Dallas selected Coale in the fifth round, McSurdy in the seventh and Johnson in the fourth.

Johnson suffered a foot injury Aug. 4 in the preseason opener. A series of hamstring injures prevented him from playing last season.

Johnson is the second member of the 2012 class to land on injured reserve. Defensive end Tyrone Crawford, a third-round pick, tore his Achilles tendon on the opening day of training camp last month.

Johnson’s latest injury opened the door for safety Jeff Heath to make the team as the only undrafted rookie to survive.

But Heath isn’t the only long shot on the roster. Injury-decimated Dallas signed journeymen defensive linemen Landen Cohen and George Selvie after the start of camp.
Perhaps the biggest surprise among the cuts was veteran cornerback Sterling Moore. With the SMU-ex gone, the Cowboys have only four corners on the roster: Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Orlando Scandrick and rookie B.W. Webb.

Moore outplayed Webb during camp and the preseason. But the Cowboys view Webb as a project because they like the fourth-round pick’s potential.

Safety/special teams ace and Houston native Danny McCray accepted a cut in pay to remain on the roster a fourth season. Terms of McCray’s new salary were not released, but reports place it in the range of $700,000, down from about $1.3 million.

In all, the Cowboys kept six safeties, including Eric Frampton, who is rehabbing a groin injury. And without a fullback on the roster, Dallas also went heavy at tight end, keeping five.

With so many injuries up front, the Cowboys kept 10 offensive linemen, including on-the-bubble players David Arkin and Darrion Weems, as well veteran Nave Livings, who is recovering from knee surgery.

For the second straight season, Dallas will carry only two quarterbacks after cutting Alex Tanney.

The Cowboys likely will continue to churn the bottom of the roster this week as they scan the waiver wire. Dallas is likely in the market for a linebacker after keeping only five at that position, a risky move considering the injury history of starters Sean Lee and Bruce Carter.

A corner might also be added, considering Webb’s struggles and Claiborne missing the preseason with sore knees.

The Cowboys also cut receiver Anthony Armstrong, offensive tackle Demetress Bell, receiver Tim Benford, corner Xavier Brewer, offensive tackle Edawn Coughman, guard Ray Dominguez , defensive end Jabari Fletcher, defensive end Thaddeus Gibson, safety Jakar Hamilton, center Kevin Kowalski, linebacker Cameron Lawrence, tailback Kendial Lawrence, defensive tackle Jerome Long, linebacker Brandon Magee, corner Micah Pellerin, linebacker Taylor Reed and defensive end Jason Vega.

Dallas could add Benford, Hamilton, Magee and Tanney to the practice squad if they clear waivers. Armstrong could be resigned after Week 1, when his salary won’t be guaranteed.
