SAN ANTONIO – After auditioning a handful of younger passers Tuesday, the Cowboys signed Jon Kitna as an insurance policy with Tony Romo sidelined with a back injury, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Kitna, 41, went 4-5 as a starter in 2010 after Tony Romo broke his collarbone.
Kitna retired after the 2011 season and has been working as a high school math teacher in Tacoma, Wash.
Kitna was 50-74 as a starter during his 15-year career, passing for nearly 30,000 yards with 169 touchdowns and 165 interceptions.
Backup Kyle Orton is expected to start Sunday night in the playoffs-or-bust game against the Philadelphia Eagles if Romo can’t play. Owner Jerry Jones refused to rule Romo out Tuesday despite reports that he suffered a herniated disk in the win over Washington.
