SAN ANTONIO – With the start of free agency set for March 11, the Dallas Cowboys cleared room Monday to get under the 2014 salary cap of $133 million by reportedly restructuring the contracts of linebacker Sean Lee and cornerback Orlando Scandrick.
The players converted between $3.75 million-$4.75 million from their base salaries for next season into bonuses, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The moves cleared roughly $7 million in cap room for the Cowboys, who were more than $15 million over the cap.
The club’s bloated payroll can further be reduced by releasing players and restructuring the deals of other veterans, including quarterback Tony Romo. Dallas is reportedly considering releasing center/guard Phil Costa.
