SAN ANTONIO – With backup quarterback Kyle Orton’s future uncertain, the Dallas Cowboys signed free agent Brandon Weeden to a two-year deal Monday, the team’s web site confirmed.
Weeden, a former Oklahoma State star who turns 31 in October, was released by Cleveland earlier this month after just two disappointing seasons with the Browns.
Cleveland made Weeden the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Orton indicated to the Cowboys after last season that he was uncertain whether he would fulfill the final year of his contract. It was troubling news to the team, considering franchise passer Tony Romo turns 34 next month and is recovering from the second of two back surgeries in an eight-month span.
Weeden was 5-15 as a starter with the Browns. He’s passed for 5,116 yards with 23 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in the NFL, where his passer rating is 71.8.
