OXNARD, Calif. – The Cowboys have scheduled a news conference for noon at Cowboys Stadium to make what they say will be a “major business” announcement.
Owner Jerry Jones, Arlington Mayor Bob Cluck and others will be in attendance, according to a press release issued by the team. The release doesn’t say what will be announced, but
signs point to it involving the naming rights for the $1.2 billion stadium.
The Cowboys have reportedly been negotiating with AT&T about naming rights for the $1.2 billion stadium, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The Star-Telegram in 2008 reported that the Cowboys and AT&T were in serious negotiations to name the facility AT&T Field. The newspaper reported that the possible deal included media rights that gave AT&T exclusive Cowboys content for its cable and wireless subscribers.
Experts told the Star-Telegram that the deal could be worth $10-$18 million per annually.
But the recession pulled the parties away from the negotiating table. Shortly before the stadium opened in June 2009, Jones announced there would be no naming rights deal because of the harsh economic conditions.
According to the Star-Telegram’s web site, when the Cowboys do sign a naming rights deal for the stadium, the city of Arlington will receive 5 percent or up to $500,000 a year for the deal.
