IRVING – Determined to bolster their horrific, pass-rush weak defense, the Cowboys selected Boise State defensive end Demarcus Lawrence with the 34th overall pick.
Dallas moved up to grab the edge rusher by trading their second- and third picks (Nos. 47 and 78) to the Washington Commanders.
The Cowboys reportedly had a first-round grade on Lawrence, who recorded 10.5 sacks for the Broncos last season. The 6-foot-2, 251-pound native of Aiken, South Carolina, doesn’t come without concerns after he was hit by three suspensions in college.
Dallas had one of the worst defenses in NFL history last season. During the offseason, they cut franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware in a salary cap move and watched 2013 sacks leader Jason Hatcher join the Commanders in free agency.
