SAN ANTONIO – The Cowboys seemingly are taking steps to prepare for an offseason without quarterback Tony Romo.
Although the Dallas Morning News reported this week that Romo was progressing well from surgery to repair a herniated disk, the Cowboys worked out quarterback Mike Kafka in the snow Thursday at a high school near Valley Ranch, the team’s web site reported.
Philadelphia drafted Kafka in 2010 out of Northwestern. He played in four games for the Eagles in 2011 before being released in the final cuts before the 2012 season.
Kafka had brief stints last season with New England and Jacksonville.
The Cowboys also worked out former Arena League wide receivers Braylon Bell and Maurice Williams. Bell is an Abilene Christian alumnus, while Williams is a Pittsburgh product.
Club officials are confident that Romo will be ready for training camp, but it’s uncertain whether he will participate at all in the offseason. That’s why it’s taking a close look at Kafka.
If signed, Kafka would reduce the work load during the offseason on back up Kyle Orton.
