OXNARD, Calif. – Four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jay Ratliff could be sidelined for at least two more weeks, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday.
Ratliff has been out since injuring a hamstring during the conditioning test last Saturday. Dallas is taking a cautious approach after injuries limited Ratliff to participation in just six games last season.
“He’s in rehab and doing all the stuff he needs to do but we don’t anticipate him being on the field at least until next week, and it might be a couple of weeks,” Garrett said. “But again, it’s still early. We were going to be cautious with him with regard to his groin and the other issues he had last year. He looks good. He’s working hard but he’s got to take it day by day and hopefully he will be back soon.”
On the other side of the ball, Tony Romo is looking more like his old self, Garrett said.
The quarterback is back on the field after missing most of the offseason following back surgery in April.
“I think he’s gotten better and better every day,” Garrett said. “Clearly, when he first started practicing, on the first day, he wasn’t quite himself. But the second day was better, the third day was better. He’s moving around, you see him getting away from the line of scrimmage, you see him reacting like he normally reacts. The ball is coming out of his hand better. He just not quite as stiff.
“You know, he hasn’t been in this environment in a little while. But he’s responded well to the work. We’ve monitored his throwing a little bit in the individual periods. He’s not getting in the exact rotation when we’re just throwing routes on air. But he’s getting a chance to throw to Miles (Austin) and Dez (Bryant) and some of the other first-tier guys. But he’s responded well to everything and he’s getting better every day.”
