EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Dan Bailey has made a lot of clutch kicks for the Cowboys, but his game-winning 35-yard field goal in Sunday’s 24-21 win over the Giants was special because it came in harsh conditions.
Bailey zipped the ball through the uprights as time expired on a cold, windy day.
“We just have an immense amount of confidence in him,” coach Jason Garrett said. “If you have followed out team, he has made so many big kicks at the end of games as the time is expiring or in overtime. He has just done it over and over again.”
Bailey had trouble in warm ups with the wind, so the Cowboys wanted to get the ball inside the 30-yard line. Tony Romo accomplished that with completions of 17 yards to Miles Austin and 13 yards to Cole Beasley, with the latter placing the ball at the New York 15.
“We felt he could make it from there,” Garrett said. “It’s obviously better when you get that much closer. The completion to Beasley allowed us to do that.”
Then it was up to Bailey to close the deal.
“He’s just money,” Garrett said. “He’s been really, really good.”
Garrett also praised long snapper L.P. Ladouceur and holder Chris Jones.
“I bet it was 27 degrees,” Garrett said. “It was windy, and that whole operation is critical. And the Giants have big, strong guys who like to rush field goals. And I thought our protection was really good. But we have a lot of confidence in Dan Bailey. He’s done it for us time and time again, and he did it for us again today.”
