IRVING – Speaking during his Monday news conference, Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett called the crunch-time pass interference call against cornerback Morris Claiborne “a legitimate one.”
The Cowboys’ first defensive penalty of the season came against receiver Donnie Avery on a third-and-10 call and gave Kansas City a first down, allowing them to continue to run out the clock. The quick slant to Avery likely wouldn’t have resulted in a first down had he caught the pass from Alex Smith.
“Obviously, we don’t want him to be that aggressive,” Garrett said of Claiborne. “I think that call was a legitimate one. He grabbed (Avery) a little bit and I that call was the right one. From a technical standpoint, you just have to have a little more poise in that situation.”
Claiborne defended himself Sunday, saying he thought it was a clean play and that he had no choice but to be aggressive considering it was man coverage.
