OXNARD, Calif. – When the Cowboys drafted tight end Gavin Escobar in the second round in April, it was assumed the San Diego State alum would be an immediate fit into the team’s plans to use more two tight end sets.
But after the first day of practice, it’s clear that second-year tight end James Hanna is the frontrunner to be on the field with Pro Bowler Jason Witten.
A sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma, Hanna lined up with the starters Sunday.
“Oh, it’s going to be competitive,” coach Jason Garrett said. “It’s going to be competitive throughout our football team as to who makes our team and who plays and what their roles are. It’s no different at the tight end position.
“We really like James Hanna. We drafted him and his progress and development over the course of last year was unbelievable. He just got better and better and better before our eyes. As you guys remember, we used him a lot towards the end of the year, and he really became a little bit of a mismatch player for us in certain situations.
