OXNARD, Calif. – Only 17 players remain from the 1-7 Cowboys team Jason Garrett took over after Jerry Jones fired Wade Phillips midway through the 2010 season.
That’s a good thing in Garrett’s mind because it means the team has gotten younger.
“There’s has been a lot of turnover,” Garrett said Saturday at the opening news conference of training camp. “I think we’ve done a good job as an organization getting younger. We had to get younger…We feel good about the decisions we made from a personnel standpoint the last couple of years.”
According to Garrett, the Cowboys now have just the right mix of veterans and youngsters.
“If you think about the core group of players we have – Tony Romo, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware – some of these veteran players who have been around here for a while and have been really good players for us, and then you add this younger tier of players – a Tyron Smith, a Bruce Carter, a Mo Claiborne, a Brandon Carr, Sean Lee – to the mix,” Garrett said, “you feel like there’s a good combination where we are with our roster right now.”
But the best thing, according to Garrett, is that young or old, he now has a roster filled with his kind of players.
“I like our football team a lot,” he said. “I like how we worked in the offseason. I like our personnel. I like how our staff has come together…Guys work hard. We have the right kind of guys on our football team.”
